On a wedding day or a graduation day, there is one shot almost every photographer takes: the close-up of your hands. Slipping on the ring, holding the bouquet, gripping the degree folder. Your hands sit right in the middle of the frame. This guide rounds up the nail colours and shapes that look great on camera, with real photos from our salon, prices, and how many days before the big day you should come in.

While you are getting ready for the big day, there is the dress, the hair, the makeup, the makeup artist's schedule, the little thank-you gifts for guests. So nails tend to be one of the last things on the list. That is completely normal. Plenty of brides message us looking for a slot with only a few days to go.

The trouble is, if you leave it until the night before and paint them yourself, the polish often smudges onto the skin. Then on the morning of the wedding you are greeting elders with a wai (the Thai palms-together bow), carrying things, washing your hands, and the edges start to chip. And that is how the ring close-up ends up in your album forever.

Bridal nails: which colours go with a wedding dress?

Most wedding dresses are white, cream, or a Thai-style outfit in gold tones. The nail colours that photograph best are milky, nude and soft pink shades. They do not compete with the dress or the flowers, but they make your hands look clean and your fingers look slimmer.

White bridal nails: milky white and cream

If you want simple bridal nails, milky white is the one. It melts into a white dress and looks expensive next to a Thai outfit. Want a little more depth? Go for a milky white cat eye (a magnetic gel with a line of shimmer), so the light slides across your nails every time you move your hand.

Pink bridal nails: ombre and French

Nude pink suits every skin tone. As an ombre, fading from pink at the base to milky white at the tip, it looks softer than a single flat colour. A French tip in white is the classic that never goes out of style. If you want a bit of sparkle, add a crystal or a pearl bow on just one or two fingers. There is no need to do every nail.

Short nails can look just as lovely for a wedding. A French on short nails looks neat and lets you use your hands comfortably all day. And if you love a bit of shine but do not want too much, rose gold glitter cut with a white French line sits perfectly next to a wedding ring.

Graduation nails: which tones go with the gown?

Thai graduation gowns are mostly dark, with a coloured stripe for your faculty. The graduation nails that look best in photos are nude, pink and gold, because they stand out brightly against the dark gown. When you hold your bouquet or degree folder up near your face, your hands do not look dull.

Some universities have dress guidelines for the royal degree ceremony, where graduates receive their degrees from a member of the royal family, so please check your university's announcement first. If you are not sure, nude pink works for every day, both the rehearsal days and the real ceremony.

Want it to feel more special than an ordinary day? A champagne gold cat eye with pearl charms looks instantly luxurious next to the gown. And if you are heading out to celebrate after the ceremony, a red cat eye cut with a white French tip is another look that really pops in photos.

Nail shapes and lengths that work on the day

On the day, your hands will not be resting. You will be doing the wai, taking part in rod nam sang (the Thai water-pouring blessing, where elders pour water from a conch shell over the couple's hands), shaking hands with guests, and holding a bouquet almost the whole time. Short to medium length is the easiest to live with.

Matching your nail colour to your skin tone

The same colour can look quite different on two people's hands, because every skin has its own undertone. Look at the back of your hand and the veins on your wrist. If the veins look green or yellowish, you usually have a warm undertone. If they look purple or bluish, you usually have a cool undertone.

If you are not sure, there is no need to guess. Come to the salon and compare colours on real nails. We have more than 536 gel shades to choose from, and our nail artist will pull out the close shades and hold them next to your hand. Choosing from the real thing is far more accurate than looking at a phone screen.

Bridal toenails: should you do them to match?

If you are wearing open-toe heels, or a Thai outfit where you take your shoes off during the ceremony, your toes will show up in more photos than you expect. The same colour as your hands, or a close tone, is enough. For example, a French on your hands and a plain nude pink on your toes looks coordinated without repeating the design.

How many days before the big day should you get your nails done?

The best window is 1-2 days before the event. The gel is fresh and the cuticles are still smooth. But book your slot 2-4 weeks ahead, because we only take 3 bookings a day, and if you book late you may not get the date you want.

Come in 1-2 days before, and your nails will be at their freshest when you walk up on stage. The whole event day, plus the photo session after, still falls inside our 7-day care period, so you can relax the whole way through.

Keeping your nails perfect until the day

In the run-up to the event your hands are busier than usual: packing things, wrapping guest gifts, washing up after the merit-making meal for the monks. However hard you use your hands, you can still keep your nails looking good if you remember a few simple things.

What customers say about our work

What brides worry about most is the colour not matching the photo, and nails coming off before the big day. Here are real Google reviews of our salon, in the original Thai with a short English translation.

On the day, all you need to do is hold out your hand

Once your nails are done before the event, you do not have to think about your hands at all on the morning itself. Whenever the photographer asks for a ring close-up, just hold out your hand. That photo will stay in your album for years to come.

FAQ

How many days before the wedding should I get bridal nails?

Come in 1-2 days before the event so the colour is at its freshest. If you are getting extensions, come 2-3 days before so your hands get used to them. Book 2-4 weeks ahead, because we only take 3 bookings a day.

What if a nail comes off before the big day?

If anything lifts or peels within 7 days, we fix it for free. Just message us on LINE and we will set a time for you to come in.

Can I get bridal nails on short nails?

Yes. A French, milky white or nude pink on short nails looks neat and is easy to live with. If you want long nails for photos, we can do extensions.

Should my toenails match my fingernails?

They do not need to match exactly. The same tone is enough, for example a French on your hands and nude pink on your toes. If your shoes show your toes on the day, we recommend doing both so the photos look coordinated.

What nail colour is best for graduation?

Nude, pink and gold look bright against a dark graduation gown. If it is a royal degree ceremony, check your university's dress guidelines first.

Where is the salon and how do I book?

We are at Ban Noi Tai, Soi 7/1, Mueang Nakhon Phanom. The salon is open every day from 09:00 to 18:00, and we answer chats 24 hours a day. Book on LINE @nannynails or call +66 99 002 8935.
