15 Red Nail Shades: Which Red Suits Medium Skin, Which Makes Hands Look Dull

Red, please. We hear it very often at the salon. But open the colour chart and red is not one colour. There is tomato red, cherry, brick, oxblood, burgundy, and then red cat eye and red glitter, and each one looks different on a different skin tone. This guide collects 15 red nail shades from real sets done at our salon, sorted into 5 families, and tells you which red suits medium skin, which red can make hands look dull, and how to wear red from a normal work day to New Year and Chinese New Year.
Red is a colour people fear and love in equal measure. Those who love it say red nails make hands look confident, like finishing a face of make-up in one stroke. Those who fear it usually had the same experience: they picked a red from a phone photo, and on their own hands it came out different from what they imagined. The hands looked yellow, tired, or harder than they meant them to.
That does not mean you cannot wear red. Every red has skin it goes well with, and the job is to find yours. In this guide we open real photos of 15 reds done at the salon, look at the finish, the nail shape and real customers' hands, and then sum up which red flatters medium skin and which reds need a little care so they do not make hands look worn out.
Red comes in 3 undertones, and that already narrows it down
Before the photos, remember that every red leans one of 3 ways.
- Pink-leaning red (cool) cherry, strawberry. Fresh and clean, with a little sweetness.
- Orange-leaning red (warm) tomato, brick. Warm and lively, like skin with a healthy flush.
- Deep red leaning purple or brown burgundy, oxblood, wine. Rich and calm.
If you are not sure whether your own skin leans pink or golden, there is a one-minute check in nail colours that flatter your skin tone. This guide stays on red only.
Bright reds, shades 1 to 3: tomato, cherry, strawberry
Deep reds, shades 4 to 7: burgundy, oxblood, brick, oxblood toenails
Red cat eye, shades 8 to 10: bright red, black-edged red, wine with gold
French and ombre, shades 11 to 13: white French, red-edge French on nude, nude-to-red ombre
Sparkling reds, shades 14 and 15: glitter, gold chrome
Bright reds: the red that lifts your hands at once
These are the reds most people picture first when they say red nails. Fresh and glossy, the shades that give hands the most energy of all.
1. Tomato red
An orange-leaning bright red in a glossy solid finish, on long almond nails. In the photo the colour is bright and warm, and against tan skin the fingers look longer. It is a red you can wear to a party all night without it disappearing under the lights.
2. Cherry red
A deep pinkish red with a juicy shine, like a ripe cherry. On short rounded nails it looks tidy and not severe, so it suits people who want red nails but still work with many people every day. Wear it to a meeting and it will not feel too loud.

3. Strawberry red
A jelly red you can see a little light through, on almond nails. It gives the Korean-style red that looks cleaner and lighter than an opaque red. A good pick if you like red but do not want it heavy.

Deep reds: burgundy, oxblood, brick
Deep red is the group people search for most, for example oxblood red nails and burgundy nails, because it looks rich and calm and works all year. What to know about this group is in the section on which reds can make hands look dull, further down.
4. Burgundy
A deep red with some purple in it. On short nails it comes out smooth and glossy and looks classic. In the photo every nail is evenly covered, and it works with silver or gold jewellery alike.
5. Oxblood red
A deep red leaning brown, like fresh pork blood (the Thai name, เลือดหมู). Short rounded nails, smooth gloss. With a gold ring or a diamond ring the hands look expensive in a quiet way, nothing loud. A red you can wear every day if you like a plain look.

6. Brick red
A red leaning orange-brown, like fired brick. On square nails it looks stylish and different, and it is much warmer than burgundy. It suits people who like earth tones and natural colours but still want red.
7. Oxblood red, on toenails
Glossy oxblood on toenails looks clean and tidy, goes with any sandal or open-toe shoe, and the deep colour keeps feet looking simple but with style. If your hands are bright red, oxblood on the toes is a pairing that works very well.

Red cat eye: red with light that moves
Cat eye polish has magnetic powder that the nail artist pulls into a line of light across the nail. In red, the line makes the shade look deeper and adds dimension, and it changes with the angle of the light. If you like red but worry you will get bored of it, cat eye is the answer.
8. Bright red cat eye
A bright red with a line of reflected light across the middle of the nail, on short nails. You can tell it is cat eye from far away. It has the most dimension of the bright reds, and works for an ordinary day or a special one.
9. Black-edged red cat eye
A red that fades to black at the edge of the nail, like a ruby in a dark room. It looks edgier and more serious than bright red, for people who like a deep style. In the photo the red is brightest in the middle of the nail and slowly gets darker toward the edge.

10. Wine cat eye with gold
A deep wine red with gold flecks in the line of light, on almond nails, with a thin silver line finishing the edge. It looks rich and tidy, and it goes especially well with gold jewellery.

French and ombre: red with a twist
If full red looks too heavy for you, make the red area smaller, with red only at the tip or a fade that climbs up the nail. You get the same red but lighter, and as the nail grows out the gap at the cuticle shows less.
11. Brick red with white French tips
A glossy brick red with a clean white French tip, and a thin gold line between the two colours. Red and white is polite and festive at once. It works for a temple ceremony, a wedding or Chinese New Year.
12. Oxblood alternating with red-edge French on nude
Alternate the fingers: one nail in full deep oxblood, the next a sheer pinkish nude with a thin red line at the tip. In the photo the hand is light-skinned and the nails are short and rounded. It looks quietly beautiful, and it is the most grown-up of the 15 reds.

13. Nude-to-red ombre
A fade from sheer pink nude at the cuticle up to deep red at the tip, with small gold bows and thin gold lines across the nails. Sweet but not childish. If you want red nails nobody else has, this shade does it well, and because the cuticle end is nude, grown-out nails are hard to notice.

Sparkling reds: glitter and chrome
The last group puts shine into the red. For a night out, a party, or hands that catch the eye, these two are the answer.
14. Red glitter
A glossy bright red with silver glitter scattered over the tips, long and square. It sparkles every time you move, like a party that never ends. You can wear it from New Year all the way to your own birthday.
15. Red gold chrome
Chrome powder over a red base gives a mirror-like red that flashes gold and green from some angles. Short rounded nails. On medium to tan skin it looks bold and fresh. It is the most modern-looking red of the group.

Which red suits medium skin
Medium skin is neither very fair nor very deep, and many people with it have a warm, yellow or golden undertone. The short answer is that warm-leaning reds and glossy deep reds sit on medium skin more harmoniously than a very cool pink-red. Of the 15 shades here, the ones we point to are:
- Tomato red (shade 1) the warmth goes the same way as the skin, so hands look flushed and brighter
- Brick red (shade 6) and brick with white French (shade 11) a warm earthy red that does not look hard, and the white tips add brightness
- Burgundy (shade 4) you get the rich look without worrying that your hands turn yellow, because the colour is deep and glossy
- Bright red cat eye (shade 8) and wine cat eye with gold (shade 10) the line of light contrasts with the skin and gives hands dimension
- Red gold chrome (shade 15) a warm metallic shine that suits medium to tan skin very well
Cool cherry and strawberry reds are fine to wear too, nothing is off limits. But if your skin looks clearly yellow, compare them with the warm reds above first and pick the one that makes your hands look brighter. This is an opinion about colour pairing, not a hard rule. Skin differs from person to person, and the surest way is to have the nail artist look at your real hand.
Which red can make hands look dull
To be clear first: no skin tone is unable to wear red. Dull hands are not caused by deep or light skin. They happen when there is not enough difference between nail and finger, so the nail does nothing to brighten the hand. The things that make hands look tired are usually these three.
- Dark brown-red in an opaque finish, on skin of a similar depth for example a very deep oxblood or a flat brick. Nail and finger sit at the same depth, and nothing lifts the hand.
- Matte red, or a coat so thin the colour is not full a red with no shine looks heavier than it is. A glossy top coat helps a lot. Look at shades 5 and 6, which stay fresh because they are glossy.
- Very cool pink-red on clearly yellow-leaning skin the two undertones go different ways, and in some light the hand looks more yellow.
If you love deep red but worry about dull hands, you do not have to give up the colour you like.
- Add a light point to the nail, such as the white French in shade 11, the cat eye in shade 10, or alternating with nude as in shade 12.
- Choose a high-gloss finish with a glossy top coat.
- Move one step brighter, for example from oxblood to burgundy, or from burgundy to cherry.
In short, a red that brightens your hands is a red that differs a little from your skin and has enough gloss. If you are not sure, send a photo of the back of your hand and we will look before you choose.
Red nails for New Year, Chinese New Year and festive events
Red is already the colour of the end-of-year season. Christmas is red, New Year is red, and Chinese New Year is red. As the story goes, red is the colour of Chinese New Year because of the legend of Nian, a monster that feared light, loud noise and red, so people wear and hang red to drive away bad luck and invite good fortune. Red also stands for luck, wealth and joy.
- New Year countdown or party shade 14 red glitter or shade 15 red gold chrome will last the whole night. The salon is closed on 31 December and 1 January, so if you want nails for the event, book before then.
- Chinese New Year 2570 (2027) falls on Saturday 6 February shade 11 brick with white French, or shade 10 wine cat eye with gold, goes with the red and gold outfits people like to wear over Chinese New Year.
- Christmas without painted Santas a plain burgundy or cherry red already gives the Christmas feeling.

Do red nails turn nails yellow
Wearing red nail polish without a base coat can turn nails yellow. That puts many people off red altogether, when the fix is much simpler. At the salon we put on a base coat before every colour, whatever the colour. If you do your nails at home, do not skip the base coat.
The salon is not a clinic. If your nails are yellow and thick for a long time with no link to polish, see a doctor first, and we do not paint over nails we suspect have a fungal infection.

FAQ
How many shades of red nails are there? What is oxblood red?
Red splits into several families, such as bright red, cherry, brick, burgundy and oxblood. Oxblood is a deep red leaning brown, like fresh pork blood (เลือดหมู in Thai), deeper and calmer than bright red. This guide covers 15 shades in 5 families.
Do red nails suit medium skin? Which shade?
Medium skin wears red well. Warm-leaning or glossy deep reds sit on it harmoniously, such as tomato red, brick, burgundy, red cat eye and red gold chrome. This is an opinion about colour pairing and skin differs, so send a photo of the back of your hand and we will look before you choose.
Can red nails make my hands look dull?
They can if the red is deep, opaque or matte and close in depth to the skin, so the nail does not brighten the hand. Fix it with a glossy top coat, a light point such as white French or cat eye, or a red one step brighter. It has nothing to do with skin being deep or light.
Do red nails turn nails yellow?
Wearing red polish without a base coat can turn nails yellow. At the salon we put on a base coat before every colour. If nails are yellow and thick with no link to polish, see a doctor, and we do not paint over nails we suspect have a fungal infection.
How much are red cat eye nails?
A full hand of cat eye is 400 baht, with nail shaping, base coat and top coat included. Painted details or charms are added per nail. Send us a photo of the design and we will total the price before we start.
What is the salon’s 7-day care period?
If work done at the salon lifts or peels within 7 days, bring it back and we will fix it for free. Message LINE @nannynails to arrange a time first.
