Do Fast-Growing Nails Mean You Are Healthy? A Belief Worth Checking

You clipped your nails last Sunday, and less than two weeks later the tips are tapping your phone screen again. A friend notices and says: nails that grow that fast mean you are healthy. Nice to hear. But then you think of the haircut you had at the start of the year, and your hair still feels like it is barely growing. This article checks what really makes nails grow fast, whether it means good health, and why nails seem to grow faster than hair.
The short answer first. How fast your nails grow does not tell you who is healthier. Most of what speeds nail growth is ordinary: age, weather, which finger it is, and how much you use your hands. Some conditions even make nails grow faster. What actually shows nail health is how the nail looks, not how fast it grows.
The belief: fast-growing nails mean good health. Where does it come from?
The belief has a logic to it. Nails grow out of your own body, so people reason that a strong body makes nails quickly, and someone who is very ill or eating poorly makes them slowly.
The second half of that idea is partly true. During a serious illness or high fever, a nail can stop growing for a while. When it starts again, it leaves a groove across the nail called a Beau's line. But the reverse, the faster the nails grow the healthier you are, is not true.
Picture it this way. You at 20 and you at 50, equally healthy, and your nails at 20 still grow faster. Nail speed depends on many things that have nothing to do with how fit you are. Let us go through them.
How fast do nails normally grow?
Before deciding your nails grow fast, it helps to know what normal is. Fingernails grow about 3 millimetres a month and toenails about 1.5 millimetres a month, or about 0.1 millimetres a day.
Measured on 22 healthy young adults, fingernails averaged 3.47 millimetres a month and toenails 1.62. It was a small group of young people, so the figure runs a little above the general average.
So if your nails grow about 3 millimetres a month, that is normal, not unusually fast. It is just that on a short nail, a few millimetres show clearly. The detailed numbers, how to measure your own nails, and how many weeks to wait before redoing gel nails are in our separate article how fast do nails grow and when to redo gel nails.
What makes nails grow fast?
Most of what makes nails grow faster or slower is out of our hands, and none of it says who is healthier.
- Genes Genetics is the most important factor. Siblings, especially twins, tend to have similar nail growth rates. If your mother's nails grow fast, yours may too.
- Age The younger you are, the faster your nails grow. Between the ages of 25 and 95, nail growth can drop by as much as half. A fit adult still grows nails more slowly than a teenager.
- Summer and warm weather Nails grow faster in summer. Warm weather is linked with faster nail growth and cold weather with slower growth.
- Which finger The longer the finger, the faster the nail grows, so the middle fingernail grows fastest. The little fingernail grows more slowly than the others. If some fingers need trimming more often, you are not imagining it.
- Using your hands Typing, playing the piano and nail biting are examples of things that speed nail growth. Nail biters also tend to see slightly faster growth, but the difference is too small to count. Please do not start biting to speed things up: we always tell customers that nail biting damages nails.
Notice that none of these means your nails grow fast because your body is better than someone else's. Two equally healthy people, one younger, living somewhere hot and typing all day, can easily have faster-growing nails.
Do nails grow faster on your dominant hand?
This one comes up a lot, and the information does not fully agree. Some say right-hand nails often grow faster than left-hand nails. The usual explanation is that the hand you use more grows faster.
But when both sides are actually measured, the difference between right and left is not big enough to count as a real difference. In plain terms, even if there is a difference, it is too small to spot by eye. If one hand's nails look clearly longer, it may simply come from how they were trimmed or a chipped edge.
Some conditions make nails grow faster
This is the main reason fast-growing nails do not always mean good health.
- Psoriasis Some people with psoriasis have nails that grow unusually fast. Their nails grow about 19 percent faster than those of healthy people of the same age. The suspected reason is that skin cells divide faster in this condition. The information on this is still limited.
- Overactive thyroid An overactive thyroid might lead to fast-growing nails, while an underactive thyroid may cause slow-growing, brittle nails.
No need to worry after reading this. Most people with fast-growing nails have nothing wrong with them. The point is that speed alone tells you nothing, good or bad. If you are concerned about your thyroid or skin, a doctor will check other signs, not count the days between trims.
Do nails grow faster during pregnancy?
Many people have heard that hair gets thicker and nails grow faster during pregnancy. But when nails are measured properly, the results do not match the belief.
Measured on thumbnails, pregnant and non-pregnant women see nails grow about 0.1 and 0.09 millimetres a day, a tiny difference. What does differ clearly is thickness: pregnant women's nails are thicker. Most pregnant women also say their nails grow at the same speed as before.
So if your nails feel stronger during pregnancy, it may be because they are thicker rather than growing faster. We cover nails during pregnancy separately in can you get gel nails while pregnant.
Nails growing more slowly: this is worth noticing
If nail speed tells you anything, it is when it changes a lot from your normal, especially when nails slow down or stop.
- Getting older Nails growing more slowly with age is normal.
- Serious illness or high fever A nail can pause and leave a groove across it. The groove grows out on its own, but if new grooves keep appearing, tell a doctor. More in vertical and horizontal nail ridges.
- Underactive thyroid May make nails grow slowly and become brittle, as above. If you suspect it, ask a doctor for a blood test rather than guessing.
- Nails not growing at all This is one of the signs to see a doctor about.
Nails grow fast but hair grows slow: why?
People search this a lot, and the answer is surprising: hair actually grows faster than nails. Hair grows about 1 centimetre a month, while fingernails grow about 3 millimetres a month. In the same month, hair gains roughly three times as much length.

So why does it feel the other way round? Three reasons.
- Compared with the length you already have Shoulder-length hair of around 40 centimetres that grows another centimetre barely registers. A freshly trimmed nail that grows 2 or 3 millimetres shows its white edge straight away.
- Gel nails give it away With gel nails, the bare strip at the base stands out because the colours contrast. The nail grows at the same rate; it is just easier to see.
- Hair grows in cycles, nails grow continuously Hair has a growing phase of 2 to 7 years, then a resting phase of about 4 months before it falls out. Nails keep growing without a rest phase. So a single hair does not keep getting longer for life.
So nails growing fast while hair seems slow is mostly about how we see it. It does not mean your body sends more nutrients to your nails than your hair. Heavy hair shedding, or thinning hair together with brittle nails, is a different matter and worth a doctor's check.
What to eat for faster nail growth: what does the evidence say?
The internet is full of tricks to speed up nail growth, some promising results in a week. Here are the two people mention most often.
- Biotin Biotin might help strengthen weak or brittle nails, and you should ask a doctor or pharmacist first. Note that it talks about strengthening nails that have a problem, not about making anyone's nails grow faster.
- Other supplements Some supplements have been suggested to support nail growth, but there is no conclusion that they work.
- Real deficiencies A lack of iron or zinc can make nails brittle. A real deficiency is something a blood test shows, not something to guess from nail length.
The safe route is a balanced diet with enough protein. If your nails are brittle and break easily and you also feel tired or look pale, see a doctor. Do not self-prescribe supplements to speed up nail growth. Brittle nails and the care that has evidence behind it are covered in brittle nails: causes and care.
If not speed, how do you judge nail health?
Healthy nails are smooth, without pits or grooves, one colour throughout and free of spots. Things worth showing a doctor include:
- A colour change across the whole nail, or a dark streak under the nail
- A change in nail shape, such as curling
- Nails getting thinner or thicker
- Small pits like pinpricks, or grooves
- The nail separating from the skin beneath it
- Bleeding, swelling or pain around the nails
- Nails not growing
Nothing on that list says a nail grows a little too slowly or a little too fast. What matters are visible changes to the nail itself.
Fast-growing nails: making gel nails look good for longer
If your nails grow fast, the only downside with gel nails is that the gap at the base shows a bit sooner. The fix is not to slow your nails down but to choose colours that hide the gap.
Nude, sheer pink or shades close to your natural nail let the grown-out base blend in with the gel, so your nails still look neat for more days.

Another favourite for fast growers is a fade, clear at the base and pink or white at the tip. The new growth blends into the part that is already clear, and short nails like these are easy to live with.

We do not offer gel fills. When it is time for a new set, we remove the old one and do a fresh set every round. How many weeks to wait before coming back is worked out from nail growth in how fast do nails grow.

Next time someone says your nails grow fast
Next time someone tells you fast-growing nails mean good health, take the compliment, but know that nail speed comes from genes, age, weather, which finger and how you use your hands more than from health, and that some conditions make nails grow faster too. What really shows nail health is how the nail looks: smooth, even in colour, not unusually thick or thin, and growing steadily as normal.
As for hair that seems slow, it actually grows about three times faster than your nails. We just cannot see it. For gel colours that keep fast-growing nails looking neat for longer, browse our gallery.
FAQ
Do fast-growing nails mean you are healthy?
Not necessarily. Nail speed depends mostly on genes, age, weather, which finger and how you use your hands, and some conditions such as psoriasis or an overactive thyroid can make nails grow faster. Nail health shows in how the nail looks: smooth, even in colour, not unusually thick or thin.
What makes nails grow fast?
The most common factors are genes, being young, warm weather and using your hands a lot, for example typing. The middle fingernail usually grows fastest and the little fingernail slowest. Fingernails generally grow about 3 millimetres a month.
Why do my nails grow fast but my hair grows slowly?
Hair actually grows faster. Hair grows about 1 centimetre a month and fingernails about 3 millimetres. But a short nail that grows a little shows clearly, while long hair that grows a centimetre barely looks different.
Do nails grow faster during pregnancy?
Measured against non-pregnant women, pregnant women show almost no difference in growth rate, but their nails are thicker. Most pregnant women also say their nails grew at the same rate.
Does biotin make nails grow faster?
Biotin might help strengthen weak or brittle nails. That does not mean biotin makes healthy nails grow faster. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking supplements.
