Bitten Nails: Can You Get Gel, and How Long Do You Have to Wait?

You have saved a few nail designs you love and opened them more than once, but every time you look down at your own hands you close the app. Your nails are so short the fingertip shows past them, the edges are uneven, and you assume a salon will turn you away, or that the technician will quietly judge. So you tell yourself you will wait until they grow, and then you bite them again. This article answers it straight: can bitten nails get gel, how long do you need to wait, what really should heal first, and how we do nails like these.

The short answer is yes, and at Nanny Nails you do not need to grow your nails out first. We do nails bitten short in every case. What we recommend is strengthening the nail surface with a rubber base or builder gel, so nails left thin by biting become sturdier and the colour holds well. The only thing worth waiting for is any wound around the nail, if you have one, to heal.

Before you read, a note from us Nanny Nails is a nail salon, not a clinic. What this article says about wounds and inflammation is general information, not a diagnosis. If the skin around a nail is swollen, red, hot or has pus, or a nail has changed colour, see a doctor before getting your nails done.

Why so many people think they have to wait

The idea comes from the gel nails we see everywhere on social media, which are usually long almond shapes, so people assume gel needs a free edge sticking out first. In reality gel polish coats the nail plate. It does not need any nail beyond the fingertip. However short your nails are, if there is nail plate to paint, it can be painted.

The other reason, which people rarely say out loud, is embarrassment: worrying the technician will see bitten nails and think something. Nail technicians see short and bitten nails all the time. Someone who walks in with nails like this is someone deciding to look after their hands, and there is nothing embarrassing about that.

As for waiting until they grow, in practice it rarely happens. Fingernails grow about 3 millimetres a month and take at least six months to grow back completely. All that time, bare nails with rough edges invite biting every day, so many people never get there. Meanwhile people tend to bite less when their nails look nice or when they have paid for a salon manicure. Getting your nails done now often gives them a better chance to grow than waiting.

Check before you come: fine now, or heal first?

We take bitten nails in every case, but some conditions are better left to heal first, for your own sake. A manicure involves pushing and trimming cuticles and a cleanser on the nail surface, none of which should touch an open wound.

Better to let heal first

How we do bitten nails

The main steps are the same as any gel manicure, with extra care at a few points for very short nails.

  1. Look and talk first We check the length, thickness and the skin around the nail, then suggest a rubber base or builder gel.
  2. Shaping Bitten nails are usually uneven, so we file the edges smooth and as even as possible across all fingers. A short round or rounded-square shape usually suits bitten nails best.
  3. Cuticle prep We push the cuticle back first, then trim away only the excess, with no harsh scraping. This matters for nails thinned by biting.
  4. Base and strengthening layer We apply a base before colour on every job. For bitten nails we add a rubber base or builder gel layer to make the surface smooth and sturdier.
  5. Colour and capping the tip The gel colour of your choice goes on, the free edge is sealed neatly, and each layer is cured under a UV lamp.
  6. Top coat A final glossy layer seals everything.

One thing worth knowing plainly, from our own experience: gel that lifts at the tip usually comes from a tip that was not sealed well, or a nail so short the tip is hard to seal. And nails so thin that the colour has nothing to grip can lift as a whole sheet. Those two points are exactly why we recommend strengthening bitten nails. The extra layer gives the colour something to hold on to and makes a short tip sturdier.

Rubber base or builder gel: which suits bitten nails?

Both are gel layers coated over your own nails, not false nails, so the length is still yours. The difference is thickness and hardness.

If you cannot decide, do not worry: we will look at your nails and recommend one when you arrive. For a full comparison, read What is rubber base, and how is it different from builder gel?

Colours and designs that suit bitten nails

Bitten nails can wear almost any colour, but for a first round these help hands look neat and fingers look longer. All of these are real sets on short nails done at the salon.

Nude and sheer pink: nails that look healthy

Skin-toned and sheer pink shades blend into the fingertip, so uneven lengths are less noticeable and the nails look like healthy natural nails. Ideal for a first round.

Bright shades on short rounded nails look fun and clean, and do not rely on length at all.

Deep red cat eye, matcha green and mixed sets

If you want something that looks properly styled, glossy deep shades, cat eye, or a different colour on each finger all work well on short nails.

Aftercare that lets your own nails grow

The weeks after a manicure are the best chance your own nails get to grow, because they are covered in gel with smooth edges your teeth cannot easily catch. A little extra care helps:

At around 3 millimetres a month, if you do not bite again, after two or three rounds you will start to see a white free edge past your fingertip. That is the time to choose a longer shape or a more detailed design. No need to wait: start with the nails you have now

Bitten nails can have gel, and at our salon you do not need to grow them out first. The only things worth waiting for are open wounds, bleeding, or inflamed skin around the nail, which should heal first. For nails thinned by biting, a rubber base or builder gel layer makes them sturdier and helps the colour hold. Choose a nude or sheer pink for your first round, do not pick at it, and keep coming back for fresh sets while your real nails slowly grow longer.

FAQ

Can I get gel nails if I have bitten my nails very short?

Yes. Gel polish coats the nail plate and does not need any nail past the fingertip. Nanny Nails does bitten nails in every case and recommends a rubber base or builder gel layer so nails thinned by biting become sturdier and the colour holds well.

How long do I need to grow my nails before getting gel?

At Nanny Nails you do not need to wait. You can come in even if your nails are shorter than your fingertips. What should heal first is any open wound, bleeding, or swollen, red, inflamed skin around the nail.

Which strengthening layer is best for bitten nails?

Rubber base is a thin layer that smooths the nail surface and suits people who like short nails. Builder gel is thicker and harder, better for growing nails longer or for people who are hard on their hands. We will look at your nails and recommend one.

How much does gel on bitten nails cost?

Gel colour for hands, 1 colour, is 200 baht. A rubber base adds 200 baht (400 in total) and builder gel adds 250 baht (450 in total). Colour prices include shaping, base coat and top coat.

Can getting my nails done help me stop biting?

For many people, yes. People tend to bite less when their nails look nice or when they have paid for a salon manicure, and the gel layer makes the edges smooth and hard to bite. If you truly cannot stop, talk to a doctor.

What is the salon’s 7-day care period?

If work done at the salon lifts or peels within 7 days, bring it back and we will fix it for free.
