How Long Do Gel Nails Last, and How to Keep Them Looking Good Until Your Next Visit

Five days after your manicure, you are loving your nails. Then you finish the washing up, glance down at your hands, and notice the edge of your thumbnail has started to lift, just a little. The first thing everyone wants to know about gel nails is simple: how long will they actually last? This guide covers it all. How long gel usually lasts, what makes it come off early, how to keep it looking good until your next appointment, and what to know if it is your very first gel manicure.
If your gel nails have ever come off early, it does not mean you looked after them badly. How long a gel manicure lasts depends on several things at once: your natural nails, how hard you use your hands every day, and how well the nail surface is prepared before the colour goes on. Most people who get their nails done have never had any of this explained to them.
If nobody tells you, you end up redoing your nails more often than you need to, which costs you money and wears down your natural nails too. Once you know what actually helps gel last, a single set gives you a lot more value for what you paid.
So, how long do gel nails last?
In general, gel nails done with the proper steps stay looking good for about 2-3 weeks. Some people who are fairly gentle with their hands get even longer out of them. If your hands are in water all day, or you use your nails as tools a lot, you may start to see the edges lift sooner.
Most people book a new set somewhere around the 2-3 week mark, and it is not only because the colour starts to chip. Your natural nails keep growing every single day. After a while you can see a gap between the gel and the base of your nail, and it simply does not look as neat as it did on day one.

What makes gel nails lift or peel early?
If your gel comes off within just a few days, it is usually down to one of these:
- Oil or moisture left on the nail. Before the base coat goes on, the nail surface has to be clean and completely dry. Otherwise the gel cannot grip properly.
- Colour touching the skin around the nail. Wherever the gel sits on the cuticle or side skin is the first place it lifts, and from there it spreads across the whole nail.
- The free edge was not sealed. The tip of the nail takes the most knocks. If the base, colour and top coat are not wrapped over the very edge of the tip, it chips easily.
- Using your nails as tools. Opening can tabs, scratching off stickers, prying things open. Every one of those puts leverage right on the edge of the nail.
- Long soaks or lots of chemicals. Washing dishes, doing laundry, or using cleaning products without gloves.
- Picking at your nails when you are stressed. You see a tiny lifted corner, you pick at it, and the whole layer of gel comes away in one piece.
What we do at the salon so your gel lasts
How well gel holds up starts before the first coat of colour. At our salon, the owner does every set herself, and we give the prep stage just as much time as the colour itself.
- We push back and tidy the cuticles so the colour does not sit on the skin.
- We lightly buff the nail surface and wipe away the oils so the base coat bonds firmly.
- We apply the base, colour and top coat in thin layers and cure each one under the lamp. Thin layers cure more completely than thick ones.
- We seal the free edge on every layer, so the tips do not chip easily.
And once your nails are done, every set is covered by our 7-day care period. If anything does not look right, just message us and we will take a look.

Gel manicure lasting tips: keeping them nice until your next set
These are things you can do at home without buying anything extra.
- Avoid very hot water for the first 24 hours. Showering as normal is fine, but skip long hot soaks and saunas.
- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning. This one habit makes the biggest difference of all.
- Use your fingertips, not your nail tips. Pressing buttons, opening cans, unwrapping things: use the pad of your finger or a tool instead.
- Put a little cuticle oil on before bed. The skin around your nails stays moisturised, your natural nails stay less brittle, and the gel keeps a good grip.
- If an edge lifts, do not pick at it. Message us first. If you are still within the 7-day care period, we will fix it for you.

Do gel nails last longer on toes than on hands?
Yes, usually. Gel on toenails tends to last noticeably longer than on fingernails, and many people find a gel pedicure still looks good after a month.
- Toenails grow more slowly. The gap at the base shows up much later than on your fingers.
- Toes do less work. They are not washing dishes, opening packages or knocking into things all day.
- Hands get wet far more often. Washing your hands many times a day gives the edges more chances to lift.
For toes, watch out for tight shoes with a narrow toe box that press on the tips all day, and for sand and sea water on holiday. If you want both looking good, we can do hands and feet in the same visit. Just mention it when you book so we allow enough time.
Which colours help gel nails look fresh for longer?
Every gel colour holds on equally well when the nail is prepared properly, but some colours hide wear much better, so your nails look new for longer.
- Nude, soft pink and clear shades are close to your natural nail colour, so the regrowth gap at the base is hard to spot.
- Glitter sparkles over small scratches, and a tiny chip at the tip is much less noticeable.
- Ombre fades from light at the base to deeper at the tip, so new growth blends into the lighter shade.
- Dark solid colours such as black, deep red or navy look sharp, but they show chips and regrowth more clearly than anything else.
If you use your hands a lot or want to stretch the time between sets, nude, glitter or ombre are good picks. Dark colours are still fine; you may just want to come back a little sooner.
Can you get gel nails if your nails are thin or break easily?
Yes. We have two options for thin or bendy nails.
- Rubber base is a thicker, flexible base coat that smooths the nail surface, makes thin nails feel sturdier and helps the gel grip well.
- Builder gel adds structure to the nail so it is thicker and stronger. It suits people whose nails often break or split, or who want to grow them longer.
Both stop the nail from flexing under pressure, so the gel is less likely to crack or lift at the tip. Not sure which one your nails need? Send a photo of your nails when you book and we will help you choose.
Your first gel manicure: what to know before you come in
If you have never had gel nails before, these are the questions first-timers ask us most often.
Does a gel manicure hurt?
No, it does not hurt. The cuticle work is done gently. When the gel is cured in the lamp, some people feel a brief warm sensation on the nail. That is completely normal for gel. If it ever feels too hot, just tell the nail artist straight away. She will have you lift your hand out for a moment and then finish curing.
Can I get gel nails on short nails?
Yes. Gel on short nails looks neat, is easy to live with, and often lasts well too, because the tips take fewer knocks. If you would like them longer, we can do extensions.
How long does it take?
A plain colour does not take long. If you want a design, hand painting, cat eye or crystals, it takes more time. Tell us which style you want when you book, and we will give you a rough idea of the time so you can plan your day.
How should I prepare?
Come in with bare nails, with nothing painted on them. If you still have an old gel set on, let us know when you book and we will allow extra time to remove it. You are welcome to save photos of designs you like and bring them along, or you can browse our sample designs when you get to the salon.
When should you book your next set?
These are the signs it is time for a fresh set:
- It has been 2-3 weeks and there is a clear gap at the base of your nails.
- The edges have started to lift and water can get under the gel.
- Your nails have grown long enough to get in the way or break easily.
The one thing you really should not do is peel the gel off yourself. When gel is pulled off, it takes the top layer of your natural nail with it, and your nails get thinner every time. FAQ
How long do gel nails last?
Usually about 2-3 weeks, depending on your natural nails, how you use your hands, and how well the nail surface is prepared. Most people book a new set because their nails have grown out and there is a visible gap at the base.
Why do my gel nails lift or peel so quickly?
The most common causes are oil left on the nail before the base coat, colour touching the skin around the nail, an unsealed free edge, using your nails to open or pry things, and hands that are often in water or cleaning products.
Can I get gel nails on short nails?
Yes. Gel on short nails looks neat and often lasts well, because the tips take fewer knocks. If you want them longer, we can do extensions.
Does gel last longer on toenails than on fingernails?
Usually, yes. Toenails grow more slowly and do far less work than hands, so a gel pedicure often still looks good after a month.
Does a gel manicure hurt?
No. Some people feel a brief warmth on the nail while the gel cures in the lamp, which is normal. If it feels too hot, tell the nail artist straight away.
