What are Thai lucky nail colours, and how do you use them?

In Thailand, every day of the week has its own colour. You will see it everywhere: the colour of the day on a temple offering, the yellow shirts on Monday for the late King Rama IX, who was born on a Monday, and the colour of the Buddha image for your birth day. From this comes a popular belief that each birth day has colours that bring luck in different parts of life, and colours that clash with you. The clashing colour is called kalakini (สีกาลกิณี), roughly "the unlucky colour", and people try not to wear it on important days.

Every year new lucky colours go around for the new year, and many Thais carry them into their clothes, their phone cases, their wallets and, of course, their nails. It is a belief, not a proven formula. But what really happens is simple: when you wear a colour you believe is good for you, you feel more confident, and that confidence is exactly what the people around you notice. Think of it as something fun, and as a little extra courage on a big day.

Using it is easy. There are 3 steps.

• Choose one thing you want to boost first. Work, money or love, then pick a colour from that group.
• Avoid the kalakini colour of your own birth day. If you really love that colour, use a similar shade that is not on the avoid list instead.
• Born on a Wednesday? Check your time of birth too. In Thai belief, anyone born on a Wednesday from 18:00 until before 06:00 on Thursday counts as Wednesday night, which has a completely different set of colours from Wednesday daytime.

Not sure which day of the week you were born on? Type your date of birth into any online calendar, or ask a Thai friend. Most Thais know their birth day by heart, because it also decides the colour of the Buddha image they pray to.

• Work orange, gold
• Money purple, black, grey
• Love red, pink, orange
• Avoid sky blue, navy blue

Orange lifts both work and love. A full hand of bright orange looks fresh straight away. If you want it to look a little more expensive, go for a copper cat eye (a magnetic gel with a line of shimmer), so the light moves across the nail like real gold.

• Love light pink, pastel purple, light yellow

The money colours for Monday people are easy on the eye. A glossy plain baby blue works for the office every day and never looks loud. If love is what you want to boost, light pink or pastel purple looks soft and goes with every outfit.

• Ombre fade. Put your lucky colour at the tip and fade it down into nude. It looks soft and subtle.
• French tip in your lucky colour. The nail is nude, but the tip is your colour. You can wear it anywhere, even to a strict office.
• One accent finger. Paint the whole hand in a neutral shade and put your lucky colour on the ring finger only.
• Mix two goals on one pair of hands. For example, one hand in your work colour and the other in your money colour.
