Lai Ruea Fai 2026: 10 Nail Ideas That Still Shine in Your Night Photos by the Mekong

It is the end of Buddhist Lent on the Mekong. A huge illuminated boat drifts slowly past you, you lift your hand to take a photo with the lights, and when you check your phone the background looks amazing but your nails have simply vanished into the dark. This guide gathers 10 nail looks from our own salon that really do show up on camera at night, plus the Lai Ruea Fai 2026 dates and how many days before the festival you should get your nails done.
It is not that your nails are not pretty. There just is not much light at night, so your phone camera darkens everything that does not reflect light. A colour that looks gorgeous in the salon at noon can turn flat and lifeless on the Mekong riverbank at nine o'clock at night.
The good news is that you can fix this before you even sit down, simply by choosing the right finish. Nails with shimmer, a line of light or a touch of metal catch the glow from the boats and bounce it straight back into the lens. In your photos from that night, your nails will stand out just as much as the boats do.
When is Lai Ruea Fai 2026 in Nakhon Phanom?
Lai Ruea Fai means the illuminated boat procession, Nakhon Phanom's most famous festival. In 2026 (Buddhist year 2569) it runs for 12 days and 12 nights, from 16 to 27 October 2026, around the Nakhon Phanom Provincial Hall and along the Mekong riverside on Sunthon Wichit Road. The highlight is the night of 26 October, which falls on Ok Phansa, the end of Buddhist Lent. That is the night when illuminated boats from all 12 districts of the province float out onto the river together.
This year the province has chosen the theme "Light of Faith from the Wisdom of the Mekong Basin". If you want the programme for each day, keep an eye on the announcements from the Nakhon Phanom provincial public relations office. The 26th is by far the busiest night, so if you plan to take photos by the river, give yourself extra time to find a good spot to stand.
Which colours show up on camera at night?
Before you look at the designs, keep these three simple rules in mind. Whichever look you pick, you will not go wrong.
- Anything that reflects light wins. Cat eye (magnetic gel, called ลูกแก้ว in Thai), glitter, flash glitter, chrome and rhinestones all catch the light from the boats and send a sparkle back into the camera.
- Warm tones match the firelight. The glow of the illuminated boats is orange and gold, so gold, orange and red nails blend into the same theme as the background, and your photos look planned rather than accidental.
- Dark colours need a point of light. Black or deep red looks stunning at night, but add some gold, a few stones or the light line of a cat eye finish somewhere, otherwise the colour melts into the darkness.
10 nail ideas for the Lai Ruea Fai festival
Every design below is real work from our salon, not a stock photo. Tap a picture to see it larger, and open the extra photos for each look.
1. Bronze gold cat eye
A bronze gold cat eye has a band of golden light running down the middle of each nail, and every time you move your hand the light moves with it. Under the glow of the boats it looks as if you are wearing gold jewellery on your fingertips. If you want the look that fits the festival best without overthinking it, this is the one.

2. Champagne cat eye with gold lines
If you prefer your gold quiet and elegant, try a champagne cat eye edged with a fine line of gold chrome, with tiny rhinestones on a few fingers. The pale base keeps your nails bright even when the backdrop is a dark river, so they never disappear in the frame.

3. Copper fire orange cat eye
This is the colour closest to the light of the boats themselves: a fiery orange with a copper glow. Photographed next to an illuminated boat, it looks as if the flames have spread right to the tips of your fingers. It works beautifully on short nails too, so if long nails are not your thing, this is an easy choice.

4. Wine red cat eye with gold bows
Wine red looks especially luxurious in low light. Add little gold bows on two fingers and they pick up your camera flash and the street lights as tiny sparks. Perfect if you are dressing up properly for the festival night.

5. Red and black ombre cat eye
The colour fades from black at the base to red at the tip, with a red cat eye shimmer through the middle. It looks like embers still glowing in the dark. It contrasts sharply with the night scene, so your nails never get lost against the background in your photos.

6. Black cat eye with a gold bow
For those who like things simple but not plain: a black cat eye with a silvery line of light, plus a gold bow on the ring finger. The gold becomes the point of light on your hand. It suits both the temple fair and dinner afterwards once the boats have passed.

7. Rose gold flash
Flash colour (สีแฟลช in Thai) is a reflective glitter that lights up under a camera flash. To your eyes it looks like an ordinary rose gold, but turn the flash on for a night photo and your whole hand suddenly sparkles. If you love night selfies, this is the best value look on the list.

8. Brick red with gold glitter
Glossy brick red alternates with clear nails packed with large flakes of gold glitter. Red and gold is the classic pairing for merit-making festivals, so it fits the traditional mood of the event perfectly. Big gold flakes also catch the light much better than fine glitter dust.

9. Silver mirror chrome
Silver chrome turns every nail into a small mirror. The fun part is that it reflects whatever is around you: close to the boats it glows orange and gold, under a street light it takes on a different tone, so every shot gives you a slightly different nail colour.

10. Red cat eye with rhinestones
A red cat eye is a classic that never fails. Add small clusters of rhinestones on two fingers and they sparkle whichever direction the light comes from. Whether the photo is a close-up or taken from a distance, it is clear your nails were done with care.

Visiting Nakhon Phanom for the festival? Get your nails done here
During Lai Ruea Fai a lot of people travel to Nakhon Phanom from other provinces and from abroad. If you are one of them, you can get your nails done here before heading to the riverside. The salon is in Mueang Nakhon Phanom, in the Ban Noi Tai area. We are open every day and take nail appointments from 09:00 to 18:00.
- If you arrive with some time to spare on your first day, get your nails done then and enjoy them for the rest of your trip.
- Coming with a group of friends? Pick one colour family and a different design each, for example bronze gold cat eye, copper fire orange and champagne with gold lines. Put your hands together for a group photo and it looks like a matching set.
- We take only 3 bookings a day, so if several of you are coming, tell us how many people when you book and we will plan the time properly.
How many days before the festival should you get your nails done?
Book your appointment for 1 to 3 days before the night you plan to go. The colour will be fresh and the cuticle area still neat when you take your photos. If you are going on the night of 26 October, the sweet spot is 23 to 25 October.
Do book at least 1 to 2 weeks ahead, though. We take only 3 bookings a day, the festival lasts 12 days, and plenty of people want their nails done before they go, so if you book late you may not get the day you want. After your appointment you are covered by our 7-day care period, so if anything needs fixing we will sort it out, however many nights you spend at the festival.
How to photograph your nails at night
Beautiful nails are only half the job; the other half is how you take the picture. These small tricks work with any phone.
- Turn the back of your hand toward the light source, so the glow of the boats or the street lights falls on your nails rather than behind your hand.
- Tap the screen on your nails before you press the shutter. The camera will focus and set the exposure on your nails, and the background will blur into soft circles of light all by itself.
- For flash, glitter and rhinestone nails, take one shot with the flash on and one with it off, then keep the one you like best.
- For cat eye nails, tilt your hand slowly while recording a short video. The line of light glides across the nail, and the clip looks even better than a still photo.
- Wipe your camera lens first. The Mekong riverside is humid at night, and even a slightly misty lens makes every light in the picture bloom and blur.

On the night of the boats, your nails become another light
