Loy Krathong Nail Ideas: 15 Gold, Cream and Red Designs to Wear with Thai Dress by the Mekong

Your silk Thai dress is pressed, the sash is draped over your shoulder and the krathong is ready. On a full moon night by the Mekong you lift your krathong up for a photo before letting it go, and your hands end up right in the middle of the frame. That makes your nails the first detail people notice, even before the dress. This guide gathers 15 Loy Krathong nail designs from our own salon, grouped into gold, cream and red, that suit Thai dress and still show up by candlelight, plus the Loy Krathong 2026 date, prices and how many days before the festival to get your nails done.
Loy Krathong night is one of the nights of the year when people photograph their hands the most. The classic pose is both hands holding the krathong in front of you, with candlelight glowing up from the middle of it. In a shot like that your nails are closer to the camera than anything else. If they are neat and match your outfit, the whole photo looks intentional.
The catch is that the only light that night comes from the candle in your krathong, the lamps along the path and the moon. Some colours that look lovely in daylight turn dull straight away. The good news is that you can get it right when you book. Below are the simple rules for choosing, and the designs that really work.
When is Loy Krathong 2026?
Loy Krathong in 2026 (Buddhist year 2569) falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026, the 15th waxing day of the 12th lunar month, the full moon night on the Thai lunar calendar. It lands on a weekday this year, so if you work or study, plan your nail appointment a little ahead so you are not rushing.
Loy Krathong in Nakhon Phanom: Thai dress by the Mekong
Nakhon Phanom has the Mekong right in front of the town, which gives Loy Krathong here a view you will not find elsewhere. Last year (2025, Buddhist year 2568) the province held its Loy Krathong festival by the Mekong from 1 to 5 November 2025 at the Phaya Si Sattanakharat plaza, and invited everyone to dress in Thai fabrics to float their krathong. So many local families wear Thai dress or silk to the festival together.
For the 2026 festival programme, follow the announcements from the Nakhon Phanom provincial public relations office. Once you know the dates, pick your nail day to match the night you plan to go.
Why Loy Krathong nails should be gold, cream or red
These three tones are not chosen just because they are pretty. Each one has a reason.
- Gold matches Thai dress jewellery. Thai dress usually comes with a gold belt, necklace, bangles or earrings. Gold nails become one more piece of jewellery in the same set.
- Cream and pearl stay bright in the dark. Pale shades with a pearly shimmer hold the candlelight on the nail, so your nails still show clearly in night photos instead of vanishing into the background.
- Red is the timeless colour of Thai celebrations. Red goes with almost every silk colour and with warm orange candlelight, so the whole photo feels warm.
If you cannot decide, look at the jewellery you plan to wear first. Lots of gold: choose gold or red. Silver or pearls: choose the cream tones. That alone cuts your options in half.

Gold tones
1. Gold ombre tips on nude
A sheer nude pink base with gold fading up from the tips, as if the ends of your nails were dipped in gold. It pairs perfectly with a gold ring or bangle. It looks expensive without being loud, and works both on Loy Krathong night and for a morning temple visit.

2. Gold chrome French tips
A mirror gold line along the tip on a nude base. It is the simplest of the gold looks, yet when candlelight hits it, every tip reflects a fine line of gold. Ideal if you do not like bold nails but want your hands to match your Thai dress.

3. Amber gold cat eye
A deep, slightly orange gold cat eye with a band of light down the middle like the candle flame in your krathong. The light moves every time you move your hand. Film a short video while holding your krathong and the shimmer really shows.

4. Black cat eye with a gold flash
A deep black base with a streak of gold light across the centre. It goes beautifully with dark silks such as navy, purple or black, looks quietly luxurious and stands out next to candlelight.

5. Bronze gold cat eye with glitter accents
Bronze gold cat eye alternating with a few silvery gold glitter nails. You get both the cat eye glow and a sparkle in one hand. It suits brown, brick orange or gold silks.

6. Rose gold glitter
Full-coverage rose gold glitter, the one for sparkle lovers. To the eye it reads as a soft pink gold, but when you take a flash photo at night your whole hand lights up. Great if you love selfies with friends before floating your krathong.

Cream and pearl tones
7. Pearly cream
A pale yellowish cream with a pearly sheen that looks like silk on your fingertips. It blends most smoothly with cream, white or pale gold Thai dress, and makes the whole outfit look clean and polished.

8. Snow pearl white with flash shimmer
A sheer white with tiny pearl flecks in the gel. To the eye it is a soft white, but in photos it twinkles. It suits white or pastel Thai dress and goes well with silver or pearl jewellery.

9. Pearl white shell with gold foil lines
The most refined design in this set. Some nails carry a pearl white shell pattern, others have fine lines of gold foil, a little like traditional Thai jewellery. Ideal if you are wearing formal Thai dress or planning a proper photo shoot by the Mekong.

10. Nude with gold lines and rhinestones
A sheer nude base with a curved gold line along the cuticle and small rhinestones on a few nails. It makes hands look slimmer and tidy, and it goes with Thai dress in any colour. It is the safest choice if you are still unsure about your dress colour.

Red tones
11. Red ombre with gold bows
Red fading from a sheer cuticle to a deep tip, with gold lines and gold bows on a few nails. Red and gold is the celebration colour pair every Thai person knows. Wear it with red, cream or gold Thai dress for a full festive look.

12. Red cat eye with cream accents
Red cat eye nails alternating with cream nails that carry small gold painted details, so you get both tones in one hand. If your outfit is cream silk with a red sash, this design matches every part of it.

13. Burgundy cat eye with gold bows
A deep wine red with a cat eye glow down the centre and gold bows on two nails. This shade looks especially rich in low light and suits dark silks or oxblood red Thai dress.

14. Red with gold glitter and rhinestones
Glossy red alternating with gold glitter that fades up from the cuticle, plus rhinestones and gold charms on a few nails. It is the boldest design in this guide. If you are going on stage, entering a pageant or want your nails to stand out in group photos, this is the one.

15. Champagne glitter French
A sheer nude base with champagne glitter tips finished with a thin white line. Just the right amount of sparkle. Wear it to float your krathong, then keep wearing it to work all week without it looking out of place.

More Thai-style ideas you can send us
The two images below are AI design ideas, not work from our salon. They are here to show Thai motifs that suit Loy Krathong night: the first is a gold kanok flame pattern on ruby red nails, the second is a painted lotus with gold leaf on a pale nude pink base. If you like one, save the image and send it to us. We will tell you what we can do and give you the total price before we start.

We price designs like these by their parts: the base colour, plus painting at 30 to 50 baht per nail depending on detail, plus foil or gold leaf at 30 baht per nail. Keep the details to two or three nails and the price stays reasonable.
Choosing a design for your plans that night
- Floating your krathong with family and visiting a temple. Choose something simple such as gold ombre tips, gold French, pearly cream or nude with gold lines. They look respectful and you can keep wearing them for days.
- Taking photos by the Mekong with friends. Agree on a tone first, for example everyone picks a different gold design. Your group hand photos will look like a set.
- On stage, in a pageant or out all night. Choose a bold design such as red with gold glitter and rhinestones, or red ombre with gold bows, so your nails show even from a distance.
- Prefer short nails? Every tone in this guide works on short nails. If you want extra length, we can extend your nails with PVC tips.
How to photograph your hands holding a krathong
- Hold the krathong with your fingertips rather than your whole hand, so all your nails show and your hands look slimmer.
- Turn the backs of your hands toward the camera and let the candlelight shine up onto your nails. Cat eye and pearl finishes catch this light best.
- Tap the screen on your nails before you shoot. The camera focuses on your hands and the river and lights behind you blur beautifully.
- For glitter and rhinestones, take one shot with flash and one without, then keep your favourite.
- Shoot while the krathong is still in your hands, before you place it on the water. Once it is down, your hands are low and wet and the angle is harder.
Many people also worry about getting their hands wet when they float the krathong. Cured gel nails are fine in water, so there is nothing to worry about. Just keep candle wax from dripping onto your nails when you light the candle.
How many days before Loy Krathong should you get your nails done?
Book your appointment one to three days before the night you go, so the colour is fresh and your cuticles are still neat in photos. For Loy Krathong on Tuesday 24 November, the best window is 21 to 23 November, which conveniently includes a weekend.
Do book at least one to two weeks ahead, though. We take only three appointments a day, and lots of people want their nails done in the days before Loy Krathong, especially at the weekend. After your appointment your nails are still within our 7-day care period, so you can enjoy the festival and the days after with peace of mind.
