How Long Do PVC Nail Extensions Last? Pros and Cons to Know First

You would love long, pretty nails just once, but a few questions keep holding you back. Will PVC extensions fall off halfway through? Can you still wash the dishes? And when it is time to take them off, will your real nails be ruined? This guide answers every one of those questions straight: the pros, the cons, how to look after them, how to remove them, and whether they are worth it compared with plain gel colour.
Those worries are completely fair. Plenty of people have had extensions that popped off within a few days, or had them removed and walked away with real nails so thin they hurt. But most of those stories come down to tips that were the wrong size, tips that were not fixed on firmly, or tips that were taken off the wrong way. None of that means PVC extensions are a bad choice. It means they were not done or removed properly.
So before you book, here is everything we tell customers at the salon when they ask us the same questions, in plain language.
What are PVC nail extensions?
PVC nail extensions use ready-made artificial nail tips made from PVC plastic. Our nail artist picks the right size for each of your real nails, one finger at a time, and fixes each tip on firmly. Then we file the length and shape you want, and finish with gel colour on top, exactly the same way we paint regular gel nails.
Because the tips are pre-made, the result is thin, every nail has the same shape, and you can put any design you like on top: a plain colour, a cat eye (a magnetic gel with a line of shimmer that moves with the light), a French tip, or hand-painted art.
If you have seen press-on nails at the shops and wondered about press on vs gel extensions, the idea of a pre-shaped tip is similar. The difference is in how it is done. With salon PVC extensions, each tip is sized to your own nail, fixed on firmly and shaped by the nail artist, then sealed under gel colour, rather than simply being pressed on at home.

How long do PVC nail extensions last?
If the size is right, the tips are fixed on firmly, and you look after them well, PVC extensions usually stay looking good for around 2-3 weeks. That is close to how long gel colour lasts on natural nails.
What surprises most people is why they come back for a new set. It is usually not because a nail fell off. It is because the real nail has grown out enough to show a gap at the base, and the extra length out front starts to feel a bit in the way. At that point it is simply time for a fresh set.
What makes extensions come off early?
- Using the tips of your nails to pry things open.
- Knocking your nails hard against things.
- Keeping your hands in water for a long time.
- Choosing a length that is longer than your everyday life really allows.
Avoid those four and you give your extensions the best chance of lasting the whole cycle.
PVC nail extensions: the pros
- Long nails straight away. No waiting months for your own nails to grow out.
- The same neat shape on every finger. Because the tips are ready-made, the shape does not depend on building each nail by hand.
- Thin and light. They look more natural than thick, sculpted nails.
- Quick to do. A good fit if you do not have much time.
- Easy on the budget. Extensions on your hands at our salon are 200 baht, not including the colour on top.
- A fix for short or uneven nails. If your nails are short or broken at different lengths, every finger can be the same length in a single visit.
The cons you should know before you book
- You need a little time to adjust. For the first 1-2 days your hands will feel longer than usual. Typing and picking up small things will feel a bit clumsy at first.
- Very long nails break or come off more easily. A medium length is much easier to live with day to day.
- They need to be removed properly. Pulling or picking them off yourself risks tearing the surface of your real nail. It is best to have them removed at the salon.
- They do not suit every job. If your work needs fine fingertip control all day, or your hands are in water all day, short nails with gel colour are the better choice.
None of these are deal breakers for most people. They are simply worth knowing so you choose the right length and set the right expectations from day one.

How to choose a length and shape you can live with
Length has the biggest effect on how long extensions last. The longer the nail, the more force lands on the tip every time you knock it, and the longer your hands take to adjust. Before you pick a design, think about what your hands actually do all day.
- Short to medium, just past your fingertip. Great if you do housework, type all day, or it is your first set. Life feels almost normal, and they are the hardest to knock off.
- Medium. A clearly long nail look, and after 1-2 days of getting used to them you can still pick things up, do up buttons and use your phone. Most people choose this.
- Very long. Stunning in photos and perfect around a big event or a photo shoot, but you need to be more careful every time you use your hands.
Shape matters too. A square shape with softened corners looks neat and handles knocks well. An almond shape, with a slim rounded tip, makes fingers look longer and rarely snags on fabric. A coffin shape, slim with a straight-cut tip, is for when you want the full long nail look. If you cannot decide, send us a photo of your hands and our nail artist will suggest a shape based on your nail beds and finger length.
How to look after PVC extensions so they do not come off
You do not need a complicated routine. A few small habits make a big difference.
- Use the pad of your finger or your knuckle, not the tip of your nail, to press buttons or open things.
- Wear gloves when you wash the dishes or clean.
- Take care when reaching into your bag or shutting a car door. Those are the moments long nails get knocked the most.
- Rub a little cuticle oil around your nails before bed.
- If a nail starts to move or you can see a gap, message us straight away. Do not glue it back yourself at home, because water can get trapped underneath.
What to do if an extension comes off or breaks early
Sometimes a nail comes off after a small accident, like catching it on a door or the edge of a table. Do not panic, and do not rush to fix it yourself at home.
- If a nail breaks in half, gently file the sharp edge smooth so it does not catch on clothes or scratch your skin.
- If the whole tip comes off, wash your hands and dry them well. Do not put anything on the real nail.
- Do not stick it back with household superglue. It is not made for nails, it can irritate the skin around the nail, and it is very hard to remove.
- Message us on LINE with a photo of the nail. If you are still within our 7-day care period, we will fix it for you.
If the same finger keeps losing its nail, tell the nail artist. It is usually the finger that works hardest, like the index finger you use to press and open things. Making that one nail a little shorter next time often makes a big difference.
How to remove PVC extensions without damaging your real nails
The safest way is to have them removed at the salon. Our nail artist first files away the length and the layers of colour, then soaks your nails until the glue and gel soften and the artificial tip comes away on its own, with no prying. After removal we care for the surface of your nails. If you want a new set, we can do it in the same appointment. Removal at the salon costs 100 baht if we do a new set straight after, or 150 baht if you only want them off to rest your nails.
What you should never do is pull an extension off while it is still firmly attached, or push something hard underneath it to lever it up. That peels away the top layer of your real nail along with it. That is exactly how people end up with thin, sore nails and blame the extensions. How to get ready for your PVC extension appointment
- Do not cut or file your nails beforehand. Our nail artist prepares them for you. If you cut them too short, there is less surface for the tip to hold on to.
- Tell us when you book if you have old gel or extensions on. We will allow time to remove them in the same appointment.
- Skip hand cream or oil before you come. Oil on the nail surface stops the extensions from holding well.
- If a real nail has a cut, is inflamed, or is ingrown, let it heal first. We do not treat ingrown nails.
- Send us a photo of the design you like. Our nail artist can tell you which length and shape suit it, and roughly what it will cost.
- Book ahead. We are open every day with appointments from 09:00 to 18:00, but we take only 3 bookings a day. If you need your nails ready for a set date, like a wedding or a graduation, book early to get the day you want.
How much do PVC extensions cost, and are they worth it over plain gel?
Here are our salon prices, so you can compare.
| Style | Salon price (hands) |
|---|---|
| Gel colour, 1 shade, on natural nails | 200 baht |
| PVC nail extensions | 200 baht (colour not included) |
| PVC extensions + gel colour, 1 shade | 200 + 200 baht |
| Cat eye + PVC extensions | 600 baht |
| PVC nail extensions (feet) | 250 baht |
| PVC removal with a new set / removal only | 100 / 150 baht |
So, are they worth it? If your natural nails are already long enough and strong, gel colour on its own is the best value. But if your nails are short, broken at different lengths, or you want a long nail look for a special occasion, adding PVC extensions for another 200 baht is the shortcut to long nails right away, with no waiting months for them to grow.
Very detailed designs may be priced by the design, so feel free to send us a photo and ask first. You can see the full menu on our services and prices page.

FAQ
How long do PVC nail extensions last?
If the size is right, they are fixed on firmly and you look after them well, they usually stay looking good for around 2-3 weeks. Most people come back for a new set because their real nail has grown out and shows a gap at the base.
Can I wash the dishes with PVC extensions?
Yes, but wear gloves. Soaking your hands for a long time and dishwashing liquid make extensions come off sooner.
Do PVC extensions damage your real nails?
Not if they are put on and removed the right way. Most damage comes from pulling or prying the artificial nails off yourself. It is best to have them removed at the salon.
How much do PVC nail extensions cost?
At our salon, extensions are 200 baht for hands and 250 baht for feet, not including the colour on top. If you want a cat eye, cat eye + PVC extensions is 600 baht.
Do you do acrylic or gel extensions?
We only do PVC extensions finished with gel colour. We do not do acrylic or sculpted gel extensions. To see how the three compare, read our blog post on PVC, acrylic and gel extensions.
Can I get PVC extensions if my real nails are very short?
Usually yes. Extensions are a good way to get short or unevenly broken nails to the same length in one visit. If you have a cut or inflammation around a nail, let it heal first. Send us a photo of your hands before you book.
