Article cover: PVC, acrylic and gel nail extensions, what is the difference, Nanny Nails, nail salon in Nakhon Phanom

Every time you scroll past photos of long, beautiful nails on your phone, you want them too. But the moment you go to book, you run into words like PVC, acrylic and gel, and it is hard to tell how they differ. Which one lasts? Which one works if you do a lot of housework? What does each one cost? This guide sums it all up on one page, with the most popular nail shapes shown on real work from our salon.

It is completely normal to feel confused, because every nail salon uses its own words. Some call it gel extensions, some call it polygel, and some just call everything "extensions". If you pick the wrong type, you might end up with nails that are thicker than you like, or that get in the way of your daily life, even though you have already paid for them.

So before you book, get to know the three main types below. Once you understand them, you can choose the one that fits the way you actually live, not just the one that looked nice in a photo.

What types of nail extensions are there?

The extensions you see in most nail salons fall into three big groups, based on the material used to build the extra length. The colour on top can look the same in the end, but what sits underneath changes how the nails feel, how thick they are and how long the appointment takes.

1. PVC nail extensions

These use ready-made false nails, also called tips, made from PVC plastic. They come in lots of shapes and sizes. The nail artist picks the size that fits each of your natural nails finger by finger, sticks it on firmly, files it into shape and then paints gel colour over the top. The good points: they are thin, the shape is exactly the same on every finger, they are quick to do, and the price is easy on the wallet.

2. Acrylic nail extensions

These use acrylic powder mixed with a liquid, sculpted into shape either directly on your natural nail or on a form. Once it dries, it is very hard. Acrylic suits people who want very long nails that are really strong. The downsides: the liquid has a strong smell while the nails are being done, the finished nails are usually thicker, and they are harder to remove.

3. Gel nail extensions

These use a thick, sculpting gel that is shaped and then cured under a lamp until it hardens. The result looks natural, has no strong smell and feels light on your hands. Sculpting the shape takes longer, so the price is usually higher than PVC.

At Nanny Nails, we do PVC extensions with gel colour painted on top. Acrylic and gel extensions are explained here so you can understand the differences, but they are not on our menu. If you are curious about another type, feel free to message us and ask first.

PVC vs acrylic vs gel: comparison table

Here is a side-by-side look at the three types. In each row, the answers are listed in the same order: PVC, then acrylic, then gel.

If you look after them well, all three types last about the same amount of time. Most people come back for a new set when their natural nail has grown out enough to show a gap at the base, which is usually after around 2-3 weeks. So the real differences are not really about how long they last. They are about thickness, smell, time and budget.

That is worth remembering, because many people assume the hardest material must be the longest-lasting. In practice, what usually decides how long your extensions look good is how your natural nail grows and how you use your hands, not which of the three materials you picked.

Which type suits you?

Think about what you do with your hands on a normal day, then find yourself in the list below.

The length tip applies to every material. Even the hardest extension can snap if it is much longer than your hands are used to, because you catch it on doors, bag zips and keyboards before you learn where your new fingertips are. A medium length gives you the look you want while you get used to living with it.

Which nail length suits your job?

Length matters as much as the material, because it decides how comfortably you can live with your new set. Here is a simple way to think about it in three levels.

If you cannot decide, tell our nail artist what you do with your hands on a normal day, and we will show you the length before filing. Remember that nails that are too long can always be filed shorter, but once they are filed too short, the only fix is a new set.

Popular nail shapes: which one should you pick?

The material is only half the story. The shape of your nails can change the whole look, too. These are the shapes our customers choose most often.

Almond

A rounded, tapered tip like an almond. It makes fingers look longer and slimmer. It is a shape that feels sweet and a little luxurious at the same time, and it goes with almost any design.

Ballerina or coffin

A straight, squared-off tip with sides that taper in. It looks bold and modern, and it suits long nails and designs you want to stand out.

Square and rounded square

A straight tip with sharp corners, or corners softened just a little. It looks neat, it is strong, and the edges do not chip easily. A good choice if you use your hands a lot.

Oval and other shapes

Oval has a softly rounded tip. It looks polite and understated and is easy to wear every day. Pointed shapes like stiletto are the most dramatic of all, but you need to be careful when you use your hands.

Not sure which shape flatters your hands? Bring a photo of a look you like. Our nail artist can suggest a shape and length that will look good on your fingers and still let you get on with your day.

Choosing a shape for your fingers

The same shape can look quite different from one pair of hands to the next. Look at your own fingers and natural nails first, and choosing becomes much easier.

Caring for PVC extensions in the first few days

For the first 2-3 days your hands are not used to the new length yet, and that is when nails are most likely to break or lift at the edge. Follow these tips and your set will stay looking good for longer.

After 2-3 weeks, once your natural nail has grown out enough to show a gap at the base, it is time to book a removal and a new set. We are open every day and take 3 bookings a day, so booking ahead gets you the day that suits you.

FAQ

What is the difference between PVC and gel nail extensions?

PVC uses ready-made false nails that are stuck on and then painted with gel colour. It is quick, the shape is perfect, and the price is easy on the wallet. Gel extensions are sculpted from gel and cured under a lamp. They look natural and feel light, but take longer and usually cost more.

Which type of nail extension lasts the longest?

Acrylic is the hardest, but if you look after them well, all three types last about the same. Most people get a new set when their natural nail grows out, usually after around 2-3 weeks.

What type of extensions does your salon do?

We do PVC extensions with gel colour painted on top: 200 baht for hands and 250 baht for feet. If you want a cat eye as well, cat eye + PVC extensions is 600 baht.

How long should my nails be for my first set of extensions?

Start with a medium length so your hands can get used to everyday life with them, then go longer on your next visit.

Can I remove PVC nail extensions myself at home?

It is best not to pull or prise them off yourself, because the surface of your natural nail can peel away with them, leaving your nails thin and sore. Message us to book a removal at the salon instead. Removal at the salon costs 100 baht if we do a new set straight after, or 150 baht if you only want them off to rest your nails.

Can I still type and do housework with nail extensions?

Yes, if you choose a short to medium length. At first, use your knuckles or the side of your fingertips to help with typing, and always wear gloves when you wash dishes or do laundry.

Where is the salon and how do I book?

We are at Ban Noi Tai, Soi 7/1, Mueang Nakhon Phanom. We are open every day, and nail appointments run from 09:00 to 18:00. Book on LINE @nannynails or call +66 99 002 8935.
