Article cover: the best day to cut your nails in Thai belief, Nanny Nails, nail salon in Nakhon Phanom

Every time you pick up the nail clippers, someone older in the house has something to say. It is Tuesday, leave it for another day. Or, in some homes, never on a Wednesday. Then you search online and every site tells you something different. This guide gathers the Thai beliefs about the best day to cut your nails for 2026 (the Buddhist year 2569), all 7 days, compared across 4 sets of Thai belief. We say plainly where they agree and where they do not, explain where the beliefs come from, and cover how to trim your nails in a way that is actually good for them, whichever day you choose.

Beliefs about which day to cut your nails have been passed down in Thai families for generations. Some people follow them completely, some just do not want to upset their mother, and some follow them because it simply feels right. All of that makes sense. This article is not here to say who is right. It lays out clearly what the belief says and what the facts about nails say, and you decide for yourself.

We compared four sets of the beliefs Thai people pass on for 2569. We kept only what all of them agree on. Where they describe the result differently, we note it under that day.

The short answer: good days and days to avoid

All 4 lists agree that there are 4 good days to cut your nails: Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The days the belief says to avoid are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

DayIn the beliefWhat people believe it brings
SundayGoodPrestige, influence and success
MondayGoodLuck and good things coming your way
TuesdayAvoidLosing money, conflict
WednesdayGoodClearing away bad things, protection
ThursdayAvoidObstacles or health worries (the lists differ)
FridayGoodMoney and wealth
SaturdayAvoidHealth or relationship trouble (the lists differ)

One thing most people do not realise: the nail-cutting days do not change from year to year. The list told in 2568 and the one told for 2569 are the same: the good and bad days come out the same for all 7 days. That is different from the lucky clothing or nail colours, which astrologers predict fresh every year. Read this again next year and the list of days still holds.

Cutting your nails on Sunday

Every list says Sunday is a good day. It is believed to boost prestige, influence and success at work. Some describe it as a day of strength and leadership, while others put the weight on luck. If you like to get yourself ready before a new week starts, Sunday fits nicely.

Cutting your nails on Monday

Monday is another day every list approves of. Cutting your nails is believed to open the way for luck and good things in life, and some add that it brings happiness. If you forgot to cut them yesterday, Monday is still a day the belief allows.

Cutting your nails on Tuesday, and why elders say no

Tuesday is the day people are most often told to avoid. Several lists agree that cutting your nails on a Tuesday means losing money, with wealth leaking away. Some say it brings conflict and problems. The background: in Thai, Tuesday is the day of Mars, which people in the past saw as a force of aggression and quarrels, so the belief says not to cut any part of the body on that day.

Can you cut your nails on Wednesday?

Lots of people search for this, because many families teach that Wednesday is off limits. The answer from all 4 lists is yes, you can, and Wednesday is actually a good day. It is believed to clear bad things away and protect you from harm.

The mix-up comes from a different rule: no haircuts on Wednesday. This ban is about hair, not nails. As for where the haircut ban comes from, the story goes that in old Thai belief Wednesday is the day of growth and new shoots, so people did not cut down trees or cut their hair. The popular story that barbers were all called to the palace on Wednesdays to cut the king's hair is baseless, with no evidence behind it.

If the elders at home hold that nothing at all should be cut on Wednesday, the day of growth, that belief does have a real origin. Moving your nail trim to Friday keeps everyone happy and costs you nothing.

Cutting your nails on Thursday

Every list says to avoid Thursday, but they describe the result differently. One list says it may bring obstacles and trouble, another says it brings worry and poorer health, and another mentions obstacles or sudden illness.

There is an interesting angle too: some see cutting your nails on a Thursday as disrespectful to teachers, because in Thailand Thursday is traditionally the day of teachers. Anyone who went to school in Thailand will remember that the teacher-honouring ceremony, wai khru, is usually held on a Thursday.

Cutting your nails on Friday

Friday is one of the most popular days to cut nails, because every list agrees it is the day for money, wealth and never running short. If you want pretty nails and a little boost for your finances at the same time, Friday is the day the belief favours.

Cutting your nails on Saturday

Every list says to avoid Saturday, but, as with Thursday, they do not agree on what happens. One list says it may affect your health and make you fall ill easily. Another says it affects relationships, with misunderstandings and growing apart. Another mentions both, and another calls it a day of negative energy that may bring illness or bad luck. So everyone agrees you should avoid it, but there is no single answer about the consequence.

What about Buddhist holy days?

Beyond the 7 days of the week, several lists also mention Buddhist holy days, called wan phra, which fall about four times a month on the lunar calendar. Traditionally people avoid cutting their nails and hair on these days, because they are days for keeping precepts and making merit. If the Friday you planned happens to be a holy day, families who keep this custom usually wait for the next good day. Many families are more relaxed about it today.

Where do these beliefs come from?

It is worth noting that none of the 4 lists names a specific text or astrologer behind the days. All of them simply call it an ancient belief. What we can say from what they describe:

Seen this way, the nail-cutting days are how earlier generations gave meaning to a small everyday task. Follow them and feel good, fine. Do not follow them, and you are not doing anything wrong.

The other belief people always ask about in the same breath is the rule against cutting your nails at night. That one has a different origin, and a much clearer practical reason hidden inside it. Read Can you cut your nails at night? Where the belief comes from.

The belief tells you the day. What do your nails tell you?

From a nail-health point of view, no day of the week makes your nails better or worse. What really matters is when you cut, what you cut with, and how you cut. Our tips:

For a step-by-step guide, including the shape that helps prevent ingrown nails, see how to cut your nails properly and prevent ingrown nails. If you already have an ingrown toenail, read ingrown toenails: causes and care before you cut it yourself.

How often should you cut your nails?

Fingernails grow about 3 millimetres a month, while toenails grow more slowly, about 1.5 millimetres a month. People who like short, neat nails usually trim their fingernails every 1-2 weeks, and can leave their toenails longer between trims.

If you want to follow the belief as well, it is easy to combine the two. Pick one good day as your regular nail day, such as every Sunday or every Friday, and trim after your evening shower that day. You get the peace of mind, and a steady trimming routine.

Signs that you should see a doctor, whatever day it is: a change in the colour, texture or shape of a nail, or a nail that is swollen, red or painful. These can be signs of a disease or an infection. Let a doctor look first rather than trimming or painting over it yourself.

Nails that grow fast, or nails that split

Some people cut on a lucky day every single time, yet their nails still split into layers whenever they trim them. That has nothing to do with the day. It usually comes from dry nails, hands that are often in water, or cutting when the nails are dry and hard. Notice when you usually trim. If it is when your nails are dry, switch to trimming after a shower first. A lucky day and lovely nails: booking your nail day

Many people who care about the days do not only choose the day they cut their nails. They choose the day they get their nails done, too. Every gel service at our salon already includes trimming and shaping, a base coat and a top coat, so the day you come in is also the day your nails get cut.

We are open every day, take nail appointments from 09:00 to 18:00, and take just 3 bookings a day. If you want a Friday for money or a Sunday for success, booking ahead means you get the day you want. If you would like a colour chosen by your birth day at the same time, see Thai lucky nail colours 2026 by birth day.

The owner does every set herself. The work starts with shaping to suit your hands, then the cuticles are pushed back before any excess skin is tidied. Many customers say they like that nothing is rushed. Here is a real Google review, in the original Thai with an English translation.

Any day works, if it feels right to you

If your family cares about the days, choose Sunday, Monday, Wednesday or Friday, the days every list agrees on. If not, the best day is simply the day you have just showered, have a little time, and have sharp clippers to hand. The two do not clash at all. Pick a good day by the belief, cut the right way, and you get both peace of mind and strong, healthy nails.

FAQ

Which day is best to cut your nails in 2026?

All four lists agree that the good days are Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and the days to avoid are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The list does not change from year to year.

Can I cut my nails on a Wednesday?

Yes. In Thai belief Wednesday is a good day for cutting nails, believed to clear bad things away. The Wednesday rule people remember is about haircuts, not nails.

Is Friday a good day to cut nails?

In the belief, yes. Every list agrees that Friday is the day for money and wealth, which is why many people choose to cut or do their nails on a Friday.

Does the best day depend on the day I was born?

No. This list is about the day you cut your nails, not your birth day. If you want to use your birth day for luck, that is the Thai lucky nail colour by birth day, which is a separate list.

I already cut my nails on a Tuesday. What should I do?

Nothing to worry about. It is a belief and has no effect on nail health. If it makes you feel better, pick a good day next time. What really matters for your nails is trimming after a shower, cutting toenails straight across and gently rounding the corners of your fingernails.

Does the salon trim my nails when I get gel nails?

Yes. Every service includes trimming and shaping, a base coat and a top coat. We are open every day, take bookings from 09:00 to 18:00, 3 bookings a day, and every set has a 7-day care period: if anything is not right during that time, message us and we fix it free of charge.
