Will Gel Nails Come Off on Their Own? Leave It or Head to the Salon

You glance at your hands while waiting for your coffee and notice the corner of your index fingernail has lifted a little. Your other thumb drifts over to that edge without you even noticing. Part of you wants to just peel it off and be done. Part of you wonders whether it will simply fall off by itself if you leave it. This guide answers whether gel nails come off on their own, how long you can leave a lifting nail, which signs mean you should get to the salon soon, which mean you should see a doctor, and what removal costs if you need it.
Gel that starts to lift happens to almost everyone who wears it. It does not mean you did anything wrong. But what you do after you spot that lifted edge decides whether the natural nail underneath comes out smooth and healthy, or thin, cloudy and brittle for weeks. Our nail tech has seen both outcomes many times, and usually the only difference is the choice made on the first day the edge lifted.
Gel can come off partly on its own, but the parts still attached are stuck very firmly. Waiting for it all to fall off is not a good plan, and do not peel it.
If you had it done at our salon less than 7 days ago, send us a photo first.
If several nails have lifted, a large area has lifted, or it catches on your hair and clothes, get it removed at the salon as soon as you can.
If it hurts, is swollen or has pus, or the nail under the gel looks green, see a doctor before going to any salon.
Will gel nails come off on their own?
Partly, yes. Gel does not stay on forever. As your natural nail grows and the edges start to lift, some of the gel will come away by itself. Some people find a whole piece slides off in the shower. But coming off on its own does not mean coming off without damage.
Gel is designed to be removed by soaking or wrapping in remover until it softens, not to fall away by itself. Wherever it is still attached, it is bonded very tightly to the surface of the nail. When that part gets pulled off, whether by your fingers or by catching on something, it takes the top layer of your natural nail with it. We always tell customers: do not peel or pick off gel polish yourself, because you risk tearing away layers of your nail.
So you can let gel come off by itself only when there is just a little left and it is so loose it is no longer attached. Otherwise, remove it properly.
Why you should not peel it, even if just one corner has lifted
A lifted edge is exactly where your fingers love to fiddle, when you are stressed, waiting, or scrolling on your phone. You pick a little, it feels like it is about to come off anyway, so you keep pulling. The gel comes away with a sheet of your nail surface attached. That nail is instantly thinner, with cloudy white patches, and it tears easily until new nail grows out to replace it, which takes months.
Peeling off gel is one of the most damaging nail habits there is. Read why, along with other habits that ruin nails, in 6 habits that damage your nails without you realising.
Water under the gel: what most people overlook
A lifting gel nail is not only a cosmetic problem. Where the gel lifts, a small gap forms between the gel and your natural nail. Every time you wash your hands, do the dishes or shower, water seeps into that gap, and it dries very slowly because the gel is sealing it in from above.

A gap that is closed in, damp and kept warm by your body is exactly the kind of place germs like. Some bacteria grow in damp spaces under the nail and turn it green, and artificial nails, gel nails and nails lifting away from the nail bed are among the risk factors. People whose hands are often in water are also more likely to get an infection around the nail.
That does not mean every lifted nail gets infected. But the longer water is left trapped, the higher the chance. That is why we do not recommend leaving a lifted nail for weeks waiting for it to fall off.
For the same reason, do not put nail glue or top coat over the lifted edge to seal the gap. If there is already water or moisture inside, sealing over it just traps it in for longer.

A small lift at one corner, not catching on anything
You can leave it for a short while until your salon appointment. There is no need to remove it today, but look after it as described in the next section. If you are still within 7 days of having it done with us, send us a photo straight away.
Half the nail has lifted, or several nails have
At this point the lifted gel is not protecting anything. It is just letting water in and waiting to snag on your hair and clothes. Get it removed at the salon within the next few days. The longer you wait, the more likely it is to catch on something and pull the nail surface off by itself.
Part of it has already come off, with patches of gel left behind
Do not scrape it, and do not file hard to get the remaining gel off, because the bits that are left are the most firmly attached. Remove them by wrapping with remover until the gel softens. You can do it yourself following Can you remove gel nails at home? How to do it without damaging your nails, or let the salon do it.
Pain, swelling, redness, pus, or a green colour under the gel
This is not something a nail salon can help with. See a doctor first. You do not need to take the gel off yourself before you go. We also do not paint over nails that look abnormal or might be infected. Let a doctor check it first, and come back for a manicure once your nail has healed.

Looking after a lifted nail until you can get to the salon
If you cannot get to the salon today, these steps keep the natural nail underneath as safe as possible until your appointment.
- Dry your fingers every time they get wet, especially around the lifted edge. Pat gently with a towel or tissue, do not rub.
- Wear gloves for washing up, laundry and cleaning, so less water and detergent seeps under the gel.
- Be careful with that finger when washing your hair and getting dressed. A lifted edge catches hair and fabric easily. If it snags, do not yank it; gently free the hair or fabric from the nail.
- Do not use that finger to open or pry things. Use another finger or a tool for now.
- If your hand keeps drifting to the edge, give it something else to do: hold a glass or a pen. That works better than just telling yourself not to pick.
- Take a photo of the nail. A photo from when it started lifting helps the nail tech see where it lifted and fix the cause next time.
Done at our salon less than 7 days ago? We will look after it
Every set we do comes with a 7-day care period. If any nail does not look right during that time, you do not have to decide whether to remove it or leave it. Send us a photo on LINE @nannynails, tell us which finger and how many days ago you had it done, then book a time to come in and we will fix it. The details are in the questions at the end of this article.
While you wait for your appointment, look after that finger as described above, and do not peel it. If the gel comes off because it was picked, we have to deal with a thinner nail as well, not just the lifted gel.

More than 7 days? Removal or a new set, and what it costs
If you are past the care period, you have two choices: remove the gel and get a new set in the same appointment, or remove it and give your nails a rest. Our prices are:
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Gel removal, followed by a new set | 5 baht per nail (50 baht for a full hand) |
| PVC extension removal, followed by a new set | 10 baht per nail (100 baht for a full hand) |
| Acrylic removal, followed by a new set | 15 baht per nail |
| Gel removal only, to rest your nails (includes shaping) | 100 baht |
| Removal only of PVC, hard gel or acrylic | 150 baht |
| New gel colour, hands, 1 shade | 200 baht |
For example, removing your old gel from a full hand and putting on one new gel colour comes to 250 baht. If you are planning another set anyway, removing and redoing in the same appointment saves the most time and money. When you book, let us know you have an old set to take off so we can allow enough time.
Remove it yourself or let the salon do it?
If almost all the gel has already come off, only a little is left, and you are patient enough to wrap your nails in remover and wait for the gel to soften, you can remove it at home. But if more than half the nail is still covered, or you have PVC extensions or a builder gel overlay, it is safer to have the salon remove it. Our nail tech does removals all the time, knows how long each kind of nail needs, and never has to scrape.
If it keeps lifting, look at where it lifts
If your gel lifts early almost every time, knowing what to do when it lifts only solves half the problem. The other half is finding out why it lifts. A nail tech can tell from where it lifts: at the cuticle, at the tip, or in one piece, and each has a different cause. Learn how to read your own nails in Gel nails lifting too soon? Where they lift tells you why. And if you want to know how long gel should normally last, read How long do gel nails last?
If your nails are so thin that gel often comes off in one piece, strengthening the nail before the colour goes on helps a lot. Read about the difference between rubber base and builder gel in Rubber base vs builder gel.

A lifted edge today does not have to mean thin nails for months
The day you spot a lifted corner is the easiest day to make the right call. Do not pick it, keep it dry, and send us a photo. On the day of your appointment the old gel comes off with the natural nail underneath still smooth and strong, ready for a new colour straight away. And the next time you glance at your hands while waiting for your coffee, your thumb has no lifted edge to go looking for.
In the meantime, start choosing your next colour in our nail design gallery.
FAQ
Will gel nails come off on their own?
Partly, but the parts still attached are bonded very firmly to the nail surface. If you wait for them to fall off or peel them, they usually take the top layer of your natural nail with them. Remove gel by wrapping it in remover, or have the salon do it.
Only a little has lifted. Can I leave it?
For a short while until your appointment, yes. Dry it every time it gets wet, wear gloves for washing up, and do not peel it. But do not leave it for weeks, because water can get trapped under the gel.
Is water under gel nails dangerous?
The gap under lifted gel is closed in and damp, which lets germs grow. If the nail under the gel turns green, or the skin around the nail is red, swollen, painful or has pus, see a doctor.
Can I use nail glue to stick the lifted gel back down?
We do not recommend it. If there is water or moisture underneath, sealing over it traps the moisture in for longer. It is better to remove that gel properly and redo it.
What if my set from your salon lifts within 7 days?
Every set has a 7-day care period. If it lifts or peels within 7 days, bring it back and we will fix it for free. Send a photo on LINE @nannynails and book a time to come in. Please do not peel the gel off before you come.
How much does gel removal cost at your salon?
Gel removal followed by a new set is 5 baht per nail, 50 baht for a full hand. Gel removal only, including shaping, is 100 baht. PVC removal followed by a new set is 10 baht per nail. Removal only of PVC, hard gel or acrylic is 150 baht.
