Your gel nails are three weeks old. The bare strip at the base is getting wider every day and the edge of the gel near the cuticle has started to lift a little. One part of you wants the technician to just paint over it, no removal, faster and cheaper. Another part worries your nails will suffer. This article explains where the belief that you can put gel over old gel comes from, what happens under an old layer that has started to lift once new gel goes over it, what a fill in the nail industry actually is and how it differs from painting over, and why at our salon, every time you come back, we remove the old gel and redo the whole set.

Can you put gel over old gel? Technically yes, and some technicians will do it. But two questions come first. What is the state of the nail under the old layer right now, and once new gel covers it, can you or the technician still see it? Those two questions are what this article walks through step by step.

Before you read, a note from us Nanny Nails is a nail salon, not a clinic. This article is not a diagnosis. We have not seen anyone test gel polish put over old gel polish directly, so we do not claim that every nail goes wrong after being covered. If the skin around a nail is red, swollen, painful or has pus, or the area under a nail is green or dark, see a doctor before your next manicure.

Where does the belief that gel does not need removing come from?

The belief does not come from nowhere. The nail industry really does have a service called a fill. People with artificial nails go back to the salon every 2 to 3 weeks to have them filled. The technician files the grown-out edge and fills the gap between the natural nail and the existing product.

Once people hear the word fill, they take the next step themselves: gel nails can be filled too, so there is no need to remove them. If that were true it would be great. No waiting, no removal fee. But there are two things people tend not to read on to.

So the first thing to sort out is that a fill and painting over are not the same thing.

How is a fill different from painting over?

A fill means the technician files the grown-out edge of the old product and then fills the gap at the base. Painting over, as most people ask about it, means no filing and no removal: you apply a whole new coat of gel colour straight onto the old gel. From outside the result can look the same, smooth coloured nails. What is underneath is not the same.

At our salon we do not offer a gel fill. When you come back, we remove the old gel and redo the set every time. More on that below. First, let us look at what happens under the old layer when new gel goes over it.

What happens under old gel that has started to lift once new gel goes on top?

Fingernails grow about 3 millimetres a month. The gel stuck to the nail is pushed out toward the tip while the base gets bare, about 2 millimetres in three weeks. The gel edge near the cuticle is often the first place to lift. Look at the cross-section below. When new gel is applied over it, the small gap under the old edge does not go anywhere. It is sealed in under two layers.

Point 1: the gap is sealed in

If the old gel edge is lifting, there is a thin gap between the gel and the natural nail. New colour painted over it does not pull the edge back down onto the nail. It only covers the lifted edge. The gap underneath is still there, and now nobody can see it.

Point 2: moisture ends up inside

When the seal between the natural nail and an artificial nail is broken, yeast, fungus or bacteria can brew in that space, and a nail that is loose but still attached can be enough for germs to cause problems. Green nail caused by Pseudomonas follows a similar order of events: the nail separates from the nail bed first, and then the germ moves in, especially when the spot is warm and moist.

Two things we need to say plainly. First, none of this comes from testing gel over old gel directly, and it does not mean everyone who paints over will have this problem. Second, water gets into the gap every time you wash your hands, do the dishes or shower while it is still open. Once new gel seals over it, the water that went in has a harder time getting out. We wrote about this in detail in Can gel nails come off by themselves? Leave them or go to the salon?

Point 3: after painting over, nobody can see it any more

Opaque gel colour hides both the old layer and the gap under it. If that spot is cloudy white, dark or changing colour, neither you nor the technician can see it. When the old gel is removed completely, the bare nail shows its real condition before any new colour goes on. Painting over skips that chance for another round.

Point 4: thicker, and a step

This one is just simple arithmetic. Two sets of gel stacked are thicker than one. Where the old gel ends there is a raised step you can see and feel. And things stacked in layers have to come off one day anyway. Removing several layers at once is not easier than removing one layer each round.

If the old gel is still firmly stuck, can you paint over it?

To be straight about it: if there is no gap under the gel, trapped water is not the main concern. The difficulty is that you cannot check from above. A slightly lifted edge cannot be seen by eye, and please do not pick at it with a nail or a stick to find out. We always tell customers not to pick at gel that starts to come off, and to go to a technician to have it removed. What you can notice yourself is a cloudy white line at the base that was not there before, or a gel edge that catches when you run a finger over it.

And even if it is firmly stuck, you still get the raised step and the extra thickness from point 4 above.

Do you have to remove gel nails every time?

At our salon, yes, every round. We have no gel fill service. When you come back for a new set, we remove the old gel and redo it. In the nail industry, fills for artificial nails do exist as described above, but that is a different job from painting gel colour over gel colour, and frequent fills can damage the natural nail.

We are not saying every salon has to work like us, and we are not saying nails are certain to be ruined if you paint over. We are only telling you how this nail salon in Nakhon Phanom works: we remove every time.

How do we remove it, and what does it cost?

We remove gel colour with a nail drill and then wrap the nails in acetone. You do not need to pick off or remove the old gel yourself. We do it for you. Removal when you are having a new set done is 5 baht per nail, so 50 baht for all 10 nails.

A real example: gel colour on the hands, one colour, is 200 baht (shaping, base coat and top coat already included), plus 50 baht for removal on a full hand, makes 250 baht. If you have a photo of the design you want, we look at it and give you the total price before your appointment.

What does this way of working give you?

If, once the gel is off, we see a nail that is thick and yellow or looks like it could be a fungal infection, we do not paint over it, because the manicure process adds moisture to the nail. Please see a doctor first. If you are thinking of removing the gel at home instead, read the steps and cautions in How to remove gel nails at home.

The gel is lifting before your appointment. What can you do?

First, do not pick at it. Do not pick at gel that is starting to come off and have a professional remove it for you. Second, do not seal the lifted edge with top coat or glue, because that only traps the gap. Third, keep your hands as dry as you can, wear gloves when you wash dishes, and message us on LINE with a photo of your hands showing the old gel edge. We will tell you when to come in.

There are also a few small things you do not need to do before your appointment.

In short: does painting gel over old gel ruin your nails?

Without claiming more than the evidence supports: does painting over ruin every nail? No, and nobody has tested this directly for us to cite. But three things are worth thinking about. A gap under lifted gel can be a place where germs grow. Painting over seals that gap in. And once it is sealed, nobody can see it any more. The thickness and the raised step are simple reasons we can see with our own eyes.

If your gel is lifting right now, the safer route is to remove it all and look at the real nail first. At our salon, Nanny Nails in Nakhon Phanom, we do that every round, and there is a 7-day care period afterwards so you can get on with life with peace of mind.
