15 Gel Toenail Designs That Last and Stand Out in Sandals, With Real Salon Photos

In a place that feels like summer all year, sandals are most people's everyday shoes, so your feet get looked at even more than your hands. Sitting in a cafe, walking through the market or going to a temple fair, anyone who glances down sees your toenails first. The good news is that gel on toenails stays looking good for a long time, because toenails grow slowly, and with the right colour and design any pair of sandals looks like a deliberate choice. This guide collects 15 real gel toenail designs from our salon, from red toenails to brown and nude, bright colours and cute nail art, plus how to pick a colour that suits your skin and your shoes, so you can save the one you like before you book.
Plenty of people take great care of their hands, get their fingernails done every month, and forget about their feet entirely. Then one day they wear a new pair of sandals to an event and only then notice the old polish on their toes has half peeled off. It happens more often than you would think.
Gel toenails fix exactly that. One appointment keeps your feet looking neat for a long while, with no touch-ups and no worrying about chips as you walk. You just need to know that toenails call for slightly different colour and design choices than fingernails.
How gel toenails differ from regular polish
Regular polish has to air-dry, so slipping on shoes too soon leaves marks, and after a few days of walking the tips start to chip. Gel hardens layer by layer under the curing lamp, so when we finish you can put your sandals on and walk straight out. The glossy surface is hard and stands up to rubbing against your shoes much better.
Another reason gel toenails stay nice for so long is that toenails grow far more slowly than fingernails. In healthy young adults, fingernails grow about 3.47 millimetres a month on average, while toenails grow about 1.62 millimetres a month, less than half as fast. The gap at the base of the nail that tells you it is time for a new set shows up later than on your hands.
We do not do gel fills. When it is time for a new colour, we remove the old gel and redo the whole set, so the surface stays even with no thick ridge at the base.
How to paint toenails so they stand out in sandals
Toenails are a different canvas from fingernails. The big toenail is wide, the little toenail is tiny, and people mostly see them from above. So the rules for choosing colours and designs change a little.
Make the big toe the star
The big toenail is the widest, so painted art, glitter or rhinestones placed there show up best. Keep the smaller toes in a plain matching colour. The result looks intentional rather than busy, and the price stays sensible because the art is only on a few nails.
Pick a colour that contrasts with your shoes
Brown or black sandals with red, white or green toenails make your feet pop straight away. If your sandals are already a bright colour, choose a nude or brown shade so your feet look clean and the two are not fighting for attention.
Shape toenails straight, following the toe
Toenails do not need length. The best shape is cut straight across with the corners softened just slightly, following the tip of the toe. It looks tidy in sandals, and we always tell customers to cut toenails straight across rather than curving deep into the corners, because it helps prevent ingrown toenails. We shape your nails as part of every service, so you do not need to cut them before you come.
Match your fingernails
Fingernails and toenails in the same colour look like a complete, deliberate outfit. Or do a design on your fingernails and a plain toenail colour in the same shade. For how to choose fingernail designs that make your hands look slimmer, read Can you get gel nails on short nails?
Which toenail colours flatter your skin
The skin on your feet is often a little darker than on your hands, because it catches the sun whenever you wear sandals. A colour that looked great on your fingers can look different on your toes. Choose by skin tone like this.
- Fair, pinkish skin suits cherry red, hot pink, pastel blue and pinkish nudes.
- Medium skin suits deep red, caramel brown, emerald green and rose gold glitter.
- Tan or deep skin makes clean white, bright red and any vivid colour really stand out, while dark brown makes the feet look smooth and even-toned.
The caramel brown in the photo below is an example of a colour that works with almost every skin tone and does not clash with any shoe colour. For a fuller guide to flattering nail colours, read Nail colours for your skin tone

5 red toenail designs, the colour people choose most
If you cannot decide, red toenails are the safest answer. Red suits almost every skin tone, looks great with brown or black leather sandals, and is neat enough to wear to an event. Every design from here on is real work from our salon. Tap a photo to enlarge it, and you can open more photos of that design in our gallery.
1. Classic red
Glossy cherry red on all ten toes. One colour and done, a design that never goes out of style, for everyday wear or going out.
2. Glassy juicy red
Bright red with a surface so glossy it looks like glass and sparkles in the sun. Perfect for days when you want your feet to stand out more than usual.

3. Deep red with rhinestones on the big toe
Deep, almost wine red, with small rhinestones set in a curve along the base of the big toenail. Luxurious without a lot of design work.
4. Deep red with glitter
Deep red on every toe, with glitter fading in from the tip of the big toenail. The little sparkles make your feet look brighter in photos.

5. Wine red cat eye with silver glitter
The big toes are wine red cat eye with a line of light running down the middle of the nail, alternating with silver glitter on some toes. Great for parties or the end of the year.

4 brown and nude toenail designs that look expensive every day
Brown and nude shades are favourites with people who work, because they look polite, go with work shoes, and hide the gap at the base as the nail grows.
6. Mocha brown
A smooth, glossy milk-chocolate brown that makes the skin on your feet look brighter. It works with almost any pair of shoes.
7. Brown with a glitter big toe
Plain brown on every toe, with dense glitter on the big toe and a couple of others. Luxurious but still neat.

8. Greige, a grey-toned nude
A linen-like nude with a hint of grey. Clean and natural, for anyone who wants neat feet without a colour that shouts.
9. Rose gold glitter
Rose gold glitter on every toe, sparkling from every angle. Especially flattering on medium skin, and easy to wear to a wedding or a party.

3 bright and pastel toenail designs

3 cute toenail art designs
The fun thing about toenail art is that the big toe alone is enough. There is no need to paint every toe.
13. Watermelon
A big watermelon slice painted on one big toe and a white base with little watermelon pieces on the other, with the remaining toes alternating red and green. Bright and perfect for summer.
14. Hot pink with smiley daisies

Can cat eye look good on toenails?
Yes, and it really stands out in the sun. Cat eye gel contains magnetic particles that the nail artist pulls into a line of light down the middle of the nail. On a wide big toenail that line is even more visible than on a fingernail. Black, bronze-gold and dark brown are cat eye shades that look especially expensive on feet. Cat eye on all ten toenails costs 400 baht. For more cat eye shades, read How to choose cat eye nail colours

How to prepare your feet before a gel pedicure
- Wear sandals on the day. You can walk out comfortably without squeezing into closed shoes straight away.
- No need to cut your nails first. Shaping is included in the price. If you want to trim them at home, cut straight across and do not dig into the corners.
- If you have old gel on, do not pick it off yourself. We remove it before the new set for 5 baht per nail. Peeling gel off pulls away the top layer of your nail too, so please do not.
- Save photos of designs you like and send them before your appointment so we can have the right colours ready.
When to wait before getting your toenails done
Some toenails need attention before they are painted. Not because colour cannot go on, but because the colour would hide the problem from view.
- Thick, yellow or crumbly nails may be a fungal infection or something else a doctor should check. We will not paint over them. Read about the causes in What causes yellow nails
- Ingrown toenails that hurt or are red and swollen. We do not cut ingrown toenails, so please see a doctor first. If you have diabetes or poor circulation, it is even more important to have a doctor look at it. Read What causes ingrown toenails
- Open wounds around the nail. Wait until they have fully healed before booking.
Cracked heels do not stop you from getting your toenails done, but we do not offer heel scrubbing. To care for your heels at home, read What causes cracked heels
Keeping gel toenails looking good for longer
- Choose shoes with a roomy toe box. Narrow shoes squeeze the nail tips all day and wear the colour at the edges.
- Do not use your toes as tools, such as prying off your other shoe or pushing a door.
- Dry between your toes after showering or walking through water. Dry feet are more comfortable.
- Use foot cream as usual. Moisturised skin around the nails looks smooth next to the glossy colour.
- Do not pick or file the gel yourself. If you see an edge lifting, message us. Every set comes with our 7-day care period, so you can relax from day one.

FAQ
How much do gel toenails cost?
Gel colour on toenails is 250 baht for 1 colour and 300 baht for 2-3 colours. Special colours (glitter, flash, swirl, pearl) are 300 baht, and cat eye, French tips, ombre or metallic are 400 baht. Prices include shaping, base coat and top coat. Painted art and rhinestones are added per nail.
Which toenail colours flatter your skin?
Fair, pinkish skin suits cherry red, hot pink and pastel blue. Medium skin suits deep red, caramel brown and emerald green. On tan or deep skin, white, bright red and vivid colours stand out beautifully. If you are unsure, red suits almost every skin tone.
Do gel toenails last longer than gel fingernails?
Toenails grow much more slowly than fingernails. Toenails grow about 1.62 millimetres a month and fingernails about 3.47 millimetres a month, so the gap at the base shows up later. How long a set lasts depends on your shoes and how you use your feet.
Do you offer foot spa, heel scrubbing or ingrown toenail cutting?
No. We only do gel colour and nail art on toenails. An ingrown toenail that hurts or is red and swollen should be seen by a doctor.
Can you put gel over thick, yellow toenails?
We do not paint over nails that are thick, yellow or look like they may have a fungal infection, because the nail process adds moisture to the nail and an infection could spread. Please see a doctor first, then come back for your nails.
What is the salon's 7-day care period?
If work done at our salon lifts or peels within 7 days, bring it back and we will fix it for free. Message us on LINE @nannynails to arrange a time first.
