Where Should You Learn Nails, How Much Does It Cost, and How Many Days Before You Can Take Customers?

You have looked at nail courses in several places. Some last one day, some ten; prices run from just over a thousand baht to nearly twenty thousand. The more you compare, the less sure you are how much is enough. Nan, the technician and owner of Nanny Nails in Nakhon Phanom, started with a 4-day course that cost 4,999 baht, kept practising, and has now run her salon at home for more than 3 years. This article gathers the real options, government and private, the prices we checked ourselves, and what you need to be able to do before you take money from your first customer.

The question of where to learn nails hides another one inside it: will I actually be able to do it afterwards? An expensive course does not guarantee you can do the work when it ends, and a cheap one is not necessarily wasted money. What decides it is how many times you do the work with your own hands, and how you keep practising after the course.

Nan started with a 4-day course for 4,999 baht

Our salon did not start at a famous school or with a course costing tens of thousands. Nan took a 4-day nail course and paid 4,999 baht. The course gave her the basics and the right way to do things. Steady hands, speed and work that lasts came from practising after the course ended.

Today the salon runs from her home in Ban Noi Tai, with 144 Google reviews at 5.0, and the owner still does every job herself. We are not saying a 4-day course is the best choice. We want you to see that the course fee does not have to be high to start this career, if you keep practising seriously.

Where can you learn nails? Three main routes

1. Government programmes: low cost, good for picking up a brush for the first time

The strength of this route is the low cost, which suits people who are not yet sure they like the work. The limit is that many classes are very short. Six hours is enough to learn the steps, not enough to do paid work, and what is offered depends on what your local centre runs that year.

2. Private schools and academies: priced by days and techniques

On 28 September 2026 we looked at the course page of one nail academy in Bangkok. These were the promotional prices listed:

Course lengthPrice shown on the website
Basics, 1 day3,490 to 4,990 baht
Basics, 2 days6,990 baht
Professional, 3 to 4 days9,990 baht
4 to 7 days (with PVC extensions)15,990 baht
Professional, 7 to 10 days17,990 baht

The nail course listing page on the Thai freelance marketplace Fastwork says courses start at 1,000 baht and most cost 2,000 to 8,000 baht. Compared with these, the 4-day, 4,999 baht course Nan took sits in the lower to middle part of the market.

Prices differ because of three things: the number of days, the techniques taught (plain colour only, or cat eye, nail art and extensions too), and what the fee includes. Some courses include a starter kit, some do not. Compare what you actually get, not just the number.

3. Online courses or learning from videos

The cheapest, and you can learn any time, but nobody corrects your hand. A wrong brush grip from day one stays with you for a long time. This route works best as a supplement after learning with a real teacher, for example to pick up new nail art techniques, rather than as your only starting point.

The course fee is not the only money you need

Most people budget only for the course and get a shock later. Starting out costs several other things:

What you need when you open a real salon is listed in Opening a nail salon at home: what it costs.

How many days of study before you can take customers?

Honestly, there is no number of days that fits everyone. Jobsdb says learning nails at a beauty school takes about a week. Nan studied for 4 days. But both figures are study time, not the time it takes to be ready for paying customers.

Customers do not ask how many days you studied. They look at whether the nails are pretty, how many weeks they last, and whether it hurt. So the right question is whether you can do the things below every time, not how many days you have done.

An 8-point checklist before your first paying customer

Check yourself after practising for a while. Any point you cannot pass yet, keep practising that one.

  1. Clean nail prep push the cuticle back first, then trim only the excess skin, with no pain or bleeding for the customer.
  2. No colour on the skin colour right up to the base without touching the skin, on all 10 fingers, not just the easy ones.
  3. Cap the free edge on every layer and cure every layer fully. In our salon we have seen these two cause lifting at the tips and whole-nail lifting. More in Why gel nails lift.
  4. Even shape across the hand file, then look along the fingertips. Length and shape should match.
  5. Remove old gel without damaging the nail many customers arrive wearing another salon's gel. If you cannot remove it properly you will scrape the nail thin.
  6. Hygiene keep used and clean tools apart, wipe the table, and replace single-use items for every booking.
  7. Finish on time time yourself on a plain colour job. If you run far over, customers get tired and your salon can take fewer bookings.
  8. Know when to say no we do not paint over thick yellow nails or suspected fungus, and we do not cut ingrown nails; we suggest seeing a doctor. Being willing to say no is part of the skill.

A practice ladder after the course: from plastic tips to real customers

The riskiest time is right after the course, when your hand is not yet steady but you want to take work. This ladder lets you practise a lot without losing customers.

  1. Practice tips paint, cap edges and repeat designs on plastic tips. Nobody gets hurt and mistakes cost nothing.
  2. Your own hands practise on your non-dominant side, then live normally and see how many days the gel lasts.
  3. People at home practise on hands whose nails and skin differ from yours, and practise talking about what they want.
  4. Friends and acquaintances, charging only for materials ask them to send a photo of their nails after several days, so you know how long your work really lasts.
  5. Real customers, starting with what you are sure of take plain colours and the techniques you have mastered first. Do not offer the ones you are not confident in yet.

Photograph every piece of work from step 3 onwards. Before long these photos become both a record of how much your hands have improved and your salon's first portfolio.

The work at our salon today climbs from easy to hard in the same way: plain colours, cat eye, small painted dots, then full nail art. If a step is not steady yet, do not skip ahead.

Checklist for choosing a nail course

Before you transfer the fee, ask the school these questions. The answers tell you more than the promotional photos.

The last point matters more than it seems, because the techniques customers want are what raise the price of each booking. A worked example of the numbers is in How much does a nail technician earn a month.

Certificates and professional qualifications: how necessary are they?

Most courses give a certificate at the end, which helps when you apply for a salon job. Customers who book, though, judge your skill mainly from photos of your work and reviews.

If after working for a while you want formal recognition of your skill, Thailand's Professional Qualification Institute (TPQI) has a qualification for nail technicians in the beauty technician field, at levels 3 and 4. Level 4 requires age 18 or over and at least 1 year of work experience, and assesses 13 competency units, from checking nail health and hygiene to extensions and design. It is a good next step once you have experience, not something you need before you start.

The opportunity for people learning nails now

The cost of getting started is not high. Government programmes offer short classes to pick up a brush, and private courses costing a few thousand baht can teach the full basics. The part most people skip is practising after the course. Whoever does that seriously ends up with hands customers trust, and can start with a small salon at home, the way we did.

If you live in a provincial town, the upside is that you are not competing with hundreds of mall salons. A technician whose work is neat, lasts, and includes the techniques local customers love will have regulars who come back and book by themselves.

FAQ

Where is the best place to learn nails?

There are three main routes: government programmes, such as the district learning centres of the Department of Learning Encouragement (formerly Non-Formal Education) and the provincial Skill Development offices, which are low cost but usually short; private schools, priced by days and techniques; and online learning, which works best as a supplement. Choose one where you do a lot of hands-on work, the teacher can look after every student, and nail prep and gel removal are taught too.

How much does a nail course cost?

The range is wide. Fastwork's course listing says courses start at 1,000 baht and most cost 2,000 to 8,000 baht. A private academy in Bangkok that we checked on 28 September 2026 ranged from 3,490 baht for 1 day to 17,990 baht for 7 to 10 days. Nan, our technician, took a 4-day course for 4,999 baht.

How many days of study before I can take customers?

There is no fixed number. Most courses take from one day to about a week, but that is study time. Readiness shows in your skill: clean nail prep, no colour on the skin, capped edges and every layer cured, gel removal without damage, and finishing on time. When you can do these every time, start charging customers.

Can I learn nails for free?

Some government bodies run short vocational classes funded by project budgets. For example, a district learning centre of the Department of Learning Encouragement ran a 6-hour gel extension and nail painting class, with the instructor and materials paid from the project budget. What is offered differs by area, so ask your district learning centre or the provincial Skill Development office.

Do I need a certificate to open a nail salon?

A course certificate helps when applying for salon jobs, while customers judge your skill mainly from work photos and reviews. What you do need to ask about before opening is a permit from your local municipality or subdistrict office. For formal recognition of your skill there is TPQI's nail technician qualification at levels 3 and 4; level 4 requires at least 1 year of experience.

What is the salon’s 7-day care period?

If work done at the salon lifts or peels within 7 days, bring it back and we will fix it for free.
