Maybe you are wondering whether you could quit your day job and make a living as a nail technician. Search online and you mostly find people saying the money is great, tens of thousands a month, but nobody shows where the numbers come from. This article works it out line by line. We use the real prices of Nanny Nails, a home nail salon in Nakhon Phanom where the owner has done every job herself for more than 3 years, compare them with our own rough monthly sales, and then take the costs off. You get a method you can drop your own numbers into straight away.

One honest point before the maths: there is no single income figure for nail technicians. Someone employed at a mall salon and someone running a small salon from home in a provincial town earn money in completely different ways. We cover both, then go into detail on the one we actually run.

Read this before the numbers The salon's sales figure in this article is a rough number given by the owner herself. Everything else is a worked example of how to calculate. The price per booking comes from our real menu; the costs, working days and other expenses are assumptions we picked to keep the maths simple. Swap in your own numbers.

Two ways to earn as a nail technician: salon job or your own salon

There are two doors into this work, and they pay differently in both amount and certainty.

Option 1: a job at a salon

We looked through nail technician job ads on a Thai job site on 28 September 2026. The ads we found offered a base salary of roughly 10,000 to 25,000 baht, with commission and tips on top. Some said total income could reach the thirty-thousands when the salon is busy. Jobsdb's career page for nail technicians says most employers look for people who finished upper secondary school, and that a course at a beauty school takes about one week.

Option 2: your own salon

There is no base salary here. Every baht comes from the customer sitting in front of you. The formula is simply this:

Monthly income = bookings in the month × average price per booking, minus costs

It looks easy, but every part of it has details that new technicians often get wrong. Below we fill in real numbers one at a time.

Example: one day, 3 bookings, real salon prices

We take 3 bookings a day between 09:00 and 18:00, because the owner does every job herself. Most customers are regulars who still have their last set on, so almost every booking starts with removing the old one. Picture a fully booked day.

BookingJob chosenPrice on our menu
Booking 1Remove old gel, then one plain colour50 + 200 = 250 baht
Booking 2Remove old gel, then cat eye, simple painted art on 5 nails and 5 small rhinestones50 + 400 + 50 + 50 = 550 baht
Booking 3Remove old PVC extensions, then cat eye with PVC extensions100 + 600 = 700 baht
Total for the day1,500 baht

Every price already includes shaping, base coat and top coat. The day brings in 1,500 baht, an average of 500 baht per booking. Notice how the 50 to 100 baht for removing the old set and the small extras such as painted art or rhinestones add up. People who work out income from the plain-colour price alone usually end up almost half below reality. At our salon, customers pay on average a little over 500 baht each, close to this example. Keep that average in mind: it is the number that moves income the most.

From one day to one month

If every day had all 3 bookings and the technician worked 26 days, taking one day off a week, income would be 1,500 × 26 = 39,000 baht. That is the ceiling for a one-person salon taking 3 bookings a day. In real life the diary is not full every day: some customers move their booking, some afternoons stay empty.

A normal month at Nanny Nails brings in about 20,000 baht or more in sales. Turned back into customers, that is roughly 40 a month, or 1 to 2 bookings a day on average. From here on the example uses 40 bookings × 550 baht = 22,000 baht as the income of a normal month.

A lot of people stop here and tell themselves they will make over twenty thousand a month. That is not yet money in your pocket.

Take the costs off: what is left?

A nail salon has costs that grow with every booking and costs you pay every month whether customers come or not. Every figure in this table is an assumption.

Cost (assumed)How it is worked outPer month
Consumables: gel colours, base, top, liquids, cotton, gloves50 baht per booking × 40 bookings2,000 baht
PVC extension materialsAssume 10 jobs at 30 baht each300 baht
Extra electricity and water (air con, desk lamp, lamp for curing)Flat monthly1,500 baht
Advertising to find customersFlat monthly3,000 baht
Files, buffers and brushes replaced as they wear outMonthly average500 baht
RentSalon at home0 baht
Total costs7,300 baht

22,000 minus 7,300 = 14,700 baht. That is the example amount left in a normal month. If the salon is not at home and you rent a shophouse, say for 4,000 baht a month, what is left drops to 10,700 baht. That is exactly why we chose to open at home from the start.

In a fully booked month, income is 39,000 baht, consumables rise to 78 bookings, total costs come to about 9,700 baht, and close to 30,000 baht is left. One technician can reach that level with enough regular customers.

This figure is also before yearly income tax, which a salon owner files herself every year. Permits and tax are covered in Opening a nail salon at home: what it costs.

A quiet month: how much changes?

Almost no new salon has as many customers as one that has been open for years. Say a month brings only 25 customers, mostly plain colours, at an average of 400 baht each.

Notice that customers fell by about half compared with a normal month, but what is left fell by about three quarters, because electricity and advertising still cost the same. That is why a small salon has to care about customers booking again, not only about finding new ones. How we found our first customers is in How a small nail salon gets customers.

ช่างมือเบา ทำดีมากๆ งานเนี้ยบมากๆ ทำตามแบบที่เราต้องการ ชอบและสวยมากๆ จะกลับมาใช้บริการอีกตลอดไปค่ะ (Gentle hands, really good work, very neat, done exactly the way I wanted. I love it and I will keep coming back.)Google review from ส ส

Same bookings, more income: raise the average per booking

A salon with one technician hits its booking ceiling fast. Taking more is not possible, and rushing ruins the work. What is left is making each booking worth more. Picture the same normal month of 40 bookings, but the average rises from 550 to 650 baht because more customers choose PVC extensions or extra art.

Small add-ons work the same way. Our menu charges 10 baht a finger for simple painted dots or hearts and 10 baht per small rhinestone. A customer who wants a little extra decoration makes that booking worth tens to a hundred baht more, for not much extra time.

The key is that you can really do it, and do it so it lasts. Customers pay more because they see work they want, not because they were pushed. A technician who practises techniques until confident, such as cat eye, nail art, extensions and nail strengthening overlays, has a higher income ceiling than one who can only paint plain colours. Choosing a course and practising until you are ready to charge customers is covered separately in Where to learn nails, and how much it costs.

A 100,000 baht start-up: when do you get it back?

Nanny Nails opened with a budget of about 100,000 baht. Using the example figures above:

This is an example too. Some of the start-up items last for years, and no salon has identical months. But seeing that 40 customers a month instead of 25 changes the payback time several times over tells you enough: keep some savings for your own living costs in the first year, rather than putting everything into equipment.

Why we take only 3 bookings a day when more would earn more

People ask this a lot. The answer is that it is our choice. The owner does every job herself and wants each booking to get its full time, without rushing so much that the gel lifts early. Customers whose nails last come back next time and bring friends.

Counting bookings alone, a fourth one looks like extra money. But if rushed work means customers do not return, next month loses more bookings than you gained. So we put more weight on repeat bookings than on extra ones.

The opportunity for nail technicians outside the big cities

People often think a nail technician has to work in a big city to earn well. Look at the formula again, though, and you will see provincial towns hide an advantage in every part of it.

You do not have to pick one forever. Many people start as a salon technician to build skill and savings, then open their own place. If there is no salon near you hiring technicians, a small salon at home may be the quicker way to start.

Put in your own numbers: 5 lines

Take a sheet of paper and write these down.

  1. The prices of the 3 jobs people near you ask for most, including removal of the old set and the extras customers usually add, averaged into a price per booking.
  2. How many bookings a day you can do without rushing. Write the real number, not the one you wish for.
  3. How many days a month you will work.
  4. Costs that grow with bookings, and costs you pay every month, as two separate lists.
  5. Work it out twice, fully booked and half booked, and plan your money on the half-booked version.

If the half-booked version still covers your living costs, the plan can really start. If it does not, you do not need to give up. You just need more savings first, or to practise the techniques that raise your average per booking.

This work does pay, if you do the maths

Being a nail technician will not make you rich fast, as some posts claim, and it is not so hard that it is not worth it, as some people fear. It is skilled handwork whose income grows with three things: skill that brings customers back, techniques that make each booking worth more, and costs you keep under control. This small home salon in Nakhon Phanom started from the same formula you have just seen.

FAQ

How much does a nail technician earn a month?

There is no single figure. A technician with her own salon works it out as bookings × average price per booking, minus costs. A normal month at Nanny Nails brings in about 20,000 baht or more in sales, and customers pay on average a little over 500 baht each, because most visits include removing the old set plus some extras. In the example, 40 bookings at 550 baht bring 22,000 baht, and after 7,300 baht of assumed costs 14,700 baht is left. A month with all 3 bookings every day can bring in about 39,000 baht.

What salary does an employed nail technician get?

In the nail technician job ads we looked at on a Thai job site on 28 September 2026, base salaries were roughly 10,000 to 25,000 baht, plus commission and tips, depending on the salon and the area.

How many bookings a day can a one-person nail salon take?

It depends on the jobs customers choose and the technician's speed. At Nanny Nails the owner does every job herself and takes 3 bookings a day between 09:00 and 18:00, so every job gets its full time.

How can a nail salon earn more when it is already fully booked?

Raise the average per booking with techniques customers really want, such as cat eye, nail art, PVC extensions and decorations, and get customers to book again. In our example, raising the average from 550 to 650 baht lifts what is left from 14,700 to 18,200 baht with the same number of bookings.

How long does it take for a nail salon to pay back its start-up cost?

Nanny Nails started with about 100,000 baht. At the example figure of 14,700 baht left in a normal month it takes about 7 months; in a quiet month with 3,750 baht left, a little over 2 years. This is an example calculation; real months differ.

What is the salon’s 7-day care period?

If work done at the salon lifts or peels within 7 days, bring it back and we will fix it for free.
