What Are Cat Eye Nails, How Are They Different from Regular Gel, What Do They Cost and How Long Do They Last?

You reach out to take your coffee, and the friend sitting next to you asks what you did to your nails. Why is there a streak of light moving across them? The answer is cat eye nails, known in Thai as ลูกแก้ว (glass marble nails). It is a gel colour with a line of light inside it, and the light shifts every time you move your hand. This guide covers everything on one page: what cat eye nails are, how a magnet makes that line of light, how they differ from regular gel, what they cost, and how long they last.
Lots of people fall for cat eye nails on their feed, then hesitate when it is time to book. Are cat eye, magnetic gel and the Thai ลูกแก้ว all the same thing? Why do they cost more than a plain colour? And will that gorgeous line of light from the photo actually last?
Once you understand how cat eye works, you can pick the right look the first time, tell your nail artist exactly what kind of shine you want, and know the price before you even sit down.
What are cat eye nails?
Cat eye nails are a special gel colour with very fine metallic particles mixed into it. A magnet can move those particles. The nail artist uses a small magnet to gather them into a line or a band of light, then cures the gel in the lamp so the light stays exactly where it was placed.
In English you will see it called cat eye nails, cat eye gel, magnetic gel or magnetic nail polish. The name cat eye comes from the bright line down the middle of the nail, which looks a lot like a cat's eye. In Thailand it is usually called ลูกแก้ว, because the shine looks deep and glassy, like looking into a marble. Some salons say เล็บแม่เหล็ก, magnetic nails. They are all the same technique.
What makes cat eye different from other finishes is that the light sits inside the colour rather than on the surface. When you tilt your hand, the line seems to glide across the nail with your viewing angle, so your nails look three-dimensional instead of flat.

How does a magnet create the line of light?
Cat eye takes longer than a plain gel colour, because the light has to be set on each nail one at a time. Here is how we do it at the salon.
- Prep and base coat. The same as any gel manicure: tidy the cuticles, lightly buff, wipe away the oils, apply the base coat and cure it.
- Base colour. Usually a dark shade or black goes on first, which makes the cat eye light far more striking. For a softer look, a nude or clear base works too.
- Cat eye gel. A thin layer, one nail at a time. At this point the metallic particles are still spread evenly across the nail.
- The magnet. The artist holds a magnet just above the nail for a few seconds. The particles slide toward the pull of the magnet and gather into a line of light. The magnet never touches your nail, and nothing about it hurts.
- Straight into the lamp. The nail goes under the lamp quickly, before the particles can drift back. Once the gel is cured, the line stays exactly there.
- Top coat. A glossy top coat seals everything in and protects the colour underneath.

Where the magnet is held, and at what angle, decides how the light looks. Held over the centre, you get a sharp line like a cat's eye. Held at an angle, the light runs diagonally. Held near the tip or the base, you get a half-nail glow. Moved around in small circles, the light spreads out over the whole nail like a galaxy. Pick whichever you like, tell the artist on the day, or send us a photo of the look you want before you come in.
Cat eye vs regular gel, glitter and chrome
All four are gel finishes and they last about the same. What is different is how the light looks on the nail.
- Regular gel colour is one even colour across the whole nail, with shine from the top coat only. It looks clean and neat, and it is the most affordable starting point.
- Cat eye has a line or band of light inside the colour that moves as you tilt your hand, with a deep, gemstone-like look.
- Glitter has sparkly flakes spread across the whole nail, each one catching the light on its own. It is fun and eye-catching, and up close you can clearly see the individual flecks.
- Chrome is a fine powder rubbed onto the gel surface to give a mirror, metallic or pearly finish across the entire nail. The whole surface reflects light at once, with no moving line like cat eye.

| Feature | Gel colour | Cat eye | Glitter | Chrome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How the light looks | Smooth gloss | A line that moves | Sparkly flecks | Whole-nail shine |
| From a distance | Neat | Deep, dimensional | Eye-catching | Glossy, metallic |
| Good for | Every day, anywhere | A luxe kind of shimmer | Parties, nights out | A modern look |
| Price, full hand | 200 baht | 400 baht | 250 baht | 600 baht (base colour 200 + chrome powder 400) |
| Wear time | About the same, with good nail prep and care | |||
If you love nails with some sparkle but do not want a full nail of glitter, cat eye is the sweet spot. It shines enough for people to notice, yet it still looks right at the office.
How much do cat eye nails cost?
Prices at Nanny Nails already include shaping, base coat and top coat.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Cat eye, full hand | 400 baht |
| Cat eye, full set of toes | 400 baht |
| Cat eye + French tips (hands) | 500 baht |
| Cat eye + PVC extensions (hands) | 600 baht |
| Cat eye on selected nails only | 40 baht per nail |
| For comparison: gel colour, hands, 1 shade | 200 baht |
| For comparison: special colours, glitter, flash, pearl (hands) | 250 baht |
Cat eye costs more than a plain gel colour because there are extra steps: a base colour first, then the cat eye gel, then setting the light with the magnet and curing each nail quickly so the line stays crisp. All ten nails have to come out as a matching set, which takes more time and more concentration.
If you only want cat eye on a few nails, say both ring fingers with a plain colour on the rest, that is no problem. Cat eye is 40 baht per nail. Send us a photo of the design on LINE and we will add up the total for the whole hand before we start. Hand painting, crystals or bows on top of cat eye are charged per nail or per piece. See the full menu on our services and prices page.

Cat eye styles we do at the salon
Cat eye is not just one colour on every nail. It pairs well with other techniques, and these are the combinations our customers choose most often, all from real work at the salon.
Cat eye + French tips
Cat eye goes on as the base, then a French line is painted across the tip in white, red or glitter. You get the sweetness of a French manicure and the glow of cat eye on the same nail. It suits weddings, graduations, or any day you want neat hands with a little extra. 500 baht.

Cat eye + PVC extensions
If your natural nails are short but you want an almond or ballerina length, we add PVC extensions first and then apply cat eye on top. The line of light looks much more fluid and striking on a long nail, because it has more room to travel. 600 baht. For more on PVC extensions, read How long do PVC nail extensions last?

Cat eye on your toes
Toenails, especially the big toe, have a wide surface, so the cat eye line shows up beautifully. Slip on sandals or open-toe shoes and your feet instantly look expensive. Toenail colour also tends to last longer than on your hands. A full set of toes is 400 baht, and we can do hands and feet in the same visit. Just mention it when you book so we allow enough time.

Cat eye + nail art, crystals or bows
Cat eye makes a lovely base for extra details. Add a small hand-painted design on one nail, crystals at the base, or a 3D bow. Extras are charged per nail or per piece. Send us a photo of the look and we will work out the price for you.

How long do cat eye nails last?
Cat eye is a type of gel colour, so it lasts as long as a regular gel manicure: generally about 2-3 weeks, depending on your natural nails, how you use your hands and how well the nail is prepped before the colour goes on. Most people book a new set because their nails have grown out and there is a gap at the base, not because the colour came off.
A question we hear a lot is whether the line of light fades. It does not. The metallic particles are locked into the cured gel, so the light stays exactly where it is until the day the gel is removed. What can make cat eye look duller is fine scratches on the top coat, and those are easy to avoid. For the full story on wear time, including why gel lifts early and how to stretch the time between sets, read How long do gel nails last?
How to keep your cat eye shine looking good until your next set
- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning. Harsh chemicals can dull the top coat, and then the cat eye light looks less clear than on day one.
- Use your fingertips, not your nail tips. Opening cans and scratching off stickers leaves scratches on the surface every time.
- Put a little cuticle oil on before bed. Smooth cuticles make your hands look better, and your cat eye photos come out better too.
- Do not pick at the edges. If something does not feel right, message us and let us take a look first. Every set comes with our 7-day care period, so you can go about your week with peace of mind.
- Have it removed at the salon when it is time. Cat eye comes off just like regular gel. If you are getting a new set straight after, removal is 50 baht for a full hand. If you would rather do it yourself, read how to do it without damaging your nails in Can you remove gel nails at home?
Who are cat eye nails for?
- Anyone who wants shimmer but not glitter. Cat eye has a soft, smooth shine with no flecks, so it works for both workdays and days out.
- Office workers. Choose cat eye in nude, soft pink or over a clear base. The light is gentle and polished, but every time you lift your hands to type, there is a flash of shine.
- Anyone with an evening event. Parties, weddings, festivals. Under warm lights or a camera flash, the cat eye line stands out even more.
- People with short nails. Cat eye looks neat and cute on short nails. If you want the light to run longer, we can add PVC extensions first.
- Anyone who has had plain colours for a while. If you want a change but not a busy design, take the colour you already love and add the light. It feels like a brand new set.
How to choose a cat eye colour that suits your hands
The simple rule: the darker the base, the sharper the line. Deep shades like wine red, navy, emerald green and black show the light most clearly. Lighter shades like nude, pink and pearl white give a softer, gentler glow. We have more than 536 gel shades to choose from.
