What Are Ombre Nails? 12 Real Pink, White and Cat Eye Ombre Designs

You have seen nails where the colour melts from the cuticle to the tip, soft pink dissolving into white or nude turning into red, and you are not sure what to tell the nail artist. The word you are looking for is ombre. This guide covers what ombre nails are, the main types, how baby boomer and cat eye ombre differ, which pink to choose, what it costs, and 12 real ombre sets from our salon that you can save and send when you book.
A colour fade looks simple and is surprisingly hard to do well. In photos it looks soft, with the colours blending as if there were no join at all. But when it is time to describe it, many people are not sure what to call it. White fade, pink tips, a blurry French: all of these belong to the same family, and that family is ombre.
Once you know the name and the main variations, talking to your nail artist gets much easier, and you end up with the nails you actually pictured.
What are ombre nails?
Ombre nails blend one colour gradually into another on the nail, with no hard line like a French tip or a two-tone design. Ombré is a French word meaning shaded. It has long described fades from light to dark in fabric and hair, and the technique later spread to nail art. In Thai you will see it written several ways, and people also simply call it a colour fade. They all mean the same thing.
Sounds technical? Think of the evening sky, where blue slowly turns orange without an edge. Ombre nails work the same way: the eye flows along the colour without stopping, so the nails look softer, longer and more expensive than a plain shade.
The most common ombre runs from the cuticle to the tip, but that is not the only direction. The fade can also run horizontally, diagonally, or outward from the centre of the nail, depending on the look you want.
What types of ombre nails are there?
Going by what people in Thailand usually ask for, ombre falls into five main groups. Knowing the names helps you ask for exactly what you want.

1. Classic cuticle-to-tip fade
The most classic version. The cuticle end is clear or nude, and the colour deepens until it is strongest at the tip: clear to pink, nude to red, nude to brown. The light base keeps the nails looking clean, while the darker tip gives the design depth.
2. Baby boomer, or French ombre
An odd name for a very familiar look: a pink or nude base that fades into milky white at the tip, like a French manicure with no line. It is also called French ombré or French fade. The name comes from the style building on the French manicure of the baby boomer years, and getting the balance of the two colours just right is harder than it looks. It looks polite and polished with work clothes, student uniforms and evening wear alike.
3. Cat eye ombre
This uses magnetic cat eye gel. The nail artist uses a magnet to pull the deeper colour or the shimmer towards the tip, fading back towards the cuticle, so you get a fade and a light-catching shimmer in one nail. For everything about cat eye gel, read What is cat eye gel?
4. Glitter ombre
Instead of fading one colour into another, the artist fades the density of glitter: packed and sparkly at the tip, thinning until it is clear at the cuticle. Great for nights out, parties and the end of the year.
5. Ombre with nail art
Ombre makes a lovely background for small details. Painted bows, dots, stars, butterflies or a few tiny rhinestones on some nails still look neat, because the base does not compete for attention. Several of our real sets below are like this.
Why people love ombre nails
- Nails look longer. Colour that flows from cuticle to tip draws the eye along the finger, so even short nails look slimmer than with a solid shade.
- Regrowth is less obvious. When the cuticle end is clear or nude, the gap that appears as your nail grows blends into the base instead of showing as a sharp line.
- Neat but not boring. A pink to white fade works for the office every day, yet has more going on than a plain nude.
- Works at any length. Short nails are fine, and long or extended nails show the fade even more. See more short-nail ideas in Can you get gel nails on short nails?
- Endless colour choices. Pink, white, red, blue, brown, or two shades that have nothing in common.
How nail artists make ombre, and why it is priced as a special technique
You do not need to know how it is done, but a little background explains why ombre costs more than a plain colour. There are mainly two methods: dabbing the colour on with a sponge, or blending two gel colours into each other with a brush. The usual way is to start at the free edge and work back towards the cuticle.
The hard part is making the fade equally smooth on all ten nails, with the colour change at the same height on every finger, without blotches or lines. That is why our salon puts ombre in the same group as cat eye, French tips and metallic. As the customer, you only need to choose the base colour, the tip colour and where you want the darker colour to start.

1. Soft pink fading to white tips, on short nails
Soft pink at the cuticle fading to white at the tip, on short square nails. A short-nail baby boomer that works every day and looks clean and tidy.
2. Clear fading to pink tips, with a cat eye shimmer
Clear at the cuticle so the natural nail shows through, then pink that slowly deepens towards the tip, with a light cat eye shimmer that sparkles as you move. Sweet on short round nails.

3. Peachy pink fading to white, almond shape
Peachy pink at the cuticle fading to white at the tip of almond nails. The blend is very soft and the fingers look long and slim. This is the look most people mean when they search for pink ombre nails.
4. Nude pink fading to white tips, baby boomer
Nude pink close to the skin tone, fading to soft white at the tip of almond nails, like a French manicure with no line. Right for weddings, graduations or work.

5. Nude fading to milky white, long square
Nude at the cuticle fading to solid milky white at the tip of long square nails, with a single rhinestone on some nails. Clean and effortlessly expensive-looking.
6. Nude fading to pearly white, with bows and dots
Sheer nude with tips fading into a pearly, silvery white, plus painted pink bows and small white dots on some nails. Cute but still neat.

7. Nude fading to red, with bows
Clear nude at the cuticle fading into bright red at the tip, with silvery white bows painted on some nails. A red fade looks brighter than solid red and feels lighter on the hand.
8. Deep red tips, almond shape
Nude pink at the cuticle and deep, almost wine red tips, glossy and juicy. Beautiful against tan skin, and ideal if you love red but want it a little softer.

9. Red fade with solid red, butterflies and rhinestones
Two looks on one hand: nude to red fades painted with white butterflies, and solid red nails with a line of rhinestones. Great for parties or festivals.
10. Blue cat eye fade at the tips
Clear at the cuticle with deep blue cat eye at the tips that catches the light like deep sea water, plus small rhinestones on some nails. A cat eye ombre that stands out from across the room.

11. Icy blue cat eye tips on a pink base
A soft pink base with icy blue cat eye tips and a sharp line of light. Two shades you would not expect to match look fresh and unusual together, and it works on short round nails too.
12. Silver glitter fade
Silver glitter packed densely at the tip and thinning until clear at the cuticle, on long square nails. Sparkly from every angle, for when you want your nails to be the star of the outfit.

Cat eye ombre vs regular cat eye
With regular cat eye, the artist sets the light as a line or a band across a single colour. With cat eye ombre, the colour or the shimmer gathers at the tip and fades towards the cuticle, or the base is cat eye with a white fade at the tip, like the pink cat eye with white tips below. You get the softness of a French ombre and the shimmer of cat eye in one nail.

We have separate guides on cat eye shades. To find the cat eye colour that suits your skin, read 10 cat eye nail colours. If you love pink in particular, see 8 pink cat eye nail ideas.
Pink ombre nails: which shade of pink?
Pink is the most popular ombre shade, but there are many pinks. Pick one that suits your skin and your hands instantly look brighter.
- Fair skin with pink undertones: soft pink fading to white, or clear fading to rose pink, look sweet and clean.
- Medium skin: peachy pink or nude pink fading to white, because the cuticle end blends into your skin and your fingers look longer.
- Tan or deeper skin: deep pink tips, fuchsia, or milky white at the tip contrast beautifully and brighten your hands.
- For the most natural look: ask for a clear or skin-toned nude at the cuticle, with the pink deepening from halfway down the nail.
For the full guide to matching nail colour to skin tone, read Nail colours for your skin tone. We have more than 536 gel shades. If you are unsure, send us a photo of your hands and we will help you pick a pink that suits you.
Which ombre for which occasion
- Everyday work: baby boomer, nude to white, or soft pink to white look neat and office-friendly.
- Weddings and graduations: nude to milky white with a tiny rhinestone on the ring finger looks polite and photographs well. More ideas in Bridal and graduation nails.
- Parties and New Year: glitter ombre, red fades with rhinestones, or blue cat eye tips.
- Trips and lots of photos: bright fades, like blue tips on a pink base, look fun and stand out in pictures.

Keeping your ombre nails looking good
- Wear gloves for dishes and laundry. Dish soap and hot water can lift the edges of gel sooner than you think.
- Apply cuticle oil before bed. It keeps the skin around the nail soft and the natural nail from drying out.
- Never peel off gel yourself. We recommend removing gel with remover, not peeling it, because peeling pulls away the top layers of your nail too.
- Use your fingertips, not your nails. Use a tool to open cans or peel stickers, so the tips, the darkest part of your ombre, do not chip.
- Every set comes with a 7-day care period. If anything looks off, just message us. Peace of mind from day one.
When your nails have grown and you want a new look, we remove the old colour and redo the whole nail every time. We do not do gel fills. Removal before a new set is 5 baht per nail, so your nails stay clean and the fade looks as smooth as the first time. To find out how long gel lasts, read How long do gel nails last?
